Don’t Just Read Occupy Spirituality – Live It!

We'd like to thank Christine Kraemer, Jim Burklo, Bruce Epperly, Carl Gregg, Chris Henrichsen and Frank Viola for taking the time to offer their thoughtful reviews on the Occupy Spirituality book club, and particularly for speaking so authentically to the ways in which the book resonated (or didn't resonate) with their personal spiritual experience. These reviews are an eloquent part of a growing conversation of commentaries from all points on the spiritual spectrum...we've included just a … [Read more...]

Spirituality Combined with A Call to Action

Both the deteriorating economy and the Occupy Generation's holistic approach to life as vocation have changed the traditional view of a working life.

For many fundamentalists, religious practice revolves around one inward-looking question: Am I saved? As the world has witnessed, however, the Occupy Generation takes their embodied spirituality in the opposite direction, eliminating the division between the sacred and mundane, and blending spiritual vocation with career and public activism. Our dialogue continues with the fourth pattern we've seen in our conversations with today's generation of mystic prophets: An Excerpt from Chapter 2 … [Read more...]

Faith in the Occupy Generation: Balancing Concept and Experience

A makeshift altar at one of the Occupy encampments

We started this series of posts by looking at the first of seven themes that we’ve seen in our intensive interviews with many of the coming generation’s evolving mystics and prophets. We witnessed the deeply ecumenical nature of the Occupy generation’s evolving spirituality…a spirituality that we feel will become the template for faith in the 21st century, moving away from the forms of institutional religion to embrace the one underlying reality at the root of all faith … [Read more...]

The Kingdom of God is US – Each and All!

"In the phrase, “The Kingdom is among you,” the word “you’ is plural! The Kingdom is among all of you, among us, where two or three are gathered together " - Matthew Fox at the second Christ Path Seminar

So Jesus was shaking up both the political and religious institutions of his day with this idea of the Kingdom of God. But what does that mean for us today, here and now, in the 21st century? Now the essence of the Kingdom, Chilton says, is based on the community’s acceptance of the poor, the hungry, the bereaved, and the shunned. The Kingdom of God is in your midst, and he points out that this is so important, that in the phrase, “The Kingdom is among you,” the word “you’ is … [Read more...]

Shaking up Empires and Priesthoods for the Sake of the Kingdom of God

Matthew10atCP2

So – we’ve looked at Jesus’ deconstructing the false gods of his day. But why – what was the larger agenda, the larger vision, behind his actions? The vision behind all his teaching, all his revolutionary words, was the Kingdom of God. Now, everyone who heard the word Kingdom in his day knew it was politically wrapped. It was about this Kingdom of God, versus the Roman Empire, the kingdom under which they were living on a daily basis. Jesus was talking to a people who were not only … [Read more...]

What Are the False Gods of Our World?

Matthew8atCP2

Jesus talks a lot about false gods. He’s talking about idolatry all the time, and about projections and the shadows of avarice and envy, for example, which as I say constitute our economic system in its present state. So again, I ask: How are we doing today with living his message? The names of the false gods of today could all be written in capital letters: for example, Nation with a capital N, or Religion with a capital R. My Religion can beat up on your Religion, my God can beat up on … [Read more...]

Unmasking the Shadow Force that’s Driving Our Economy

Matthew5atCP2

Before I move on to look at Jesus as a revolutionary, I want to take a brief detour and make one important comment about consumer capitalism as we practice it today. As consumers, we’re deluged with advertising 24/7 on TV and the Internet and all the other media, and then there are the shopping malls where we can work it out. At that end, where of course the poor and middle class are – the receiving end – there is a relentless media message to act on greed, also known as avarice: “I … [Read more...]

What Would Jesus Protest Today?

Matthew3atCP2

In my last post we looked at the men and women who are risking their lives to speak out for justice against the powers of our times. Their stories show us that it's no less daring to walk the Christ Path today than it was 1,700 years ago. So what are the issues that Jesus would speak out against today? I can think of a number of them - and any one of them is worth our complete attention and commitment. And just to name them, I think, is important: to know that there are people and groups … [Read more...]

Look Around – You Can See What Jesus Saw, Today

Matthew4atCP2

There’s such a depth and breadth to what Jesus did and called forth in his teaching that it’s almost overwhelming. He addresses all the aspects of culture and provides his disturbing perspectives. Again, it’s much easier to fall into the culture’s definitions – what is family? What is religion? What are piety and purity? What is economics? So much more comfortable to do that than to raise the kind of questions that Jesus raised 2000 years ago and that we need to be raising … [Read more...]

Are We Reading the Jesus Story for Inspiration –
or Incitement?

Matthew1atCP2

I want to welcome you to the conversations of the second Christ Path Seminar – Cosmic Christ and the Historical Jesus. As we enter these conversations, Andrew and I both feel the time has come to urge more and more people who want to follow a Jesus path, whether singly or in tandem with other paths, to really wake up, because time is running out for our planet as we know it and our species as we know it. These are serious times - but not lugubrious times; play and celebration and prayer … [Read more...]
