From Mrs. B.: Angela has made a great mummy and was kind enough to show us how! This would make a great lawn ornament for your Halloween party, or how spooky would it be, hiding in a coat closet?!
How to Make a Mummy
Gathering a large slew of great Halloween decorations can be daunting and very expensive. Making some items are one of the best ways to build up your supply and save money. Today I am going to show you how to make your very own Mummy.
Here is what you will need:
A piece of foam board. These are pink or blue and for a realistic mummy get one as tall as yourself.
Wig head. This can be found at Sally’s Beauty Supply or at Amazon.com
Two twin white sheets (or one King will suffice). If you don’t have a white sheet on hand, check the local Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Hot glue gun and glue sticks.
Strong tea or coffee.
Paint & brushes
Newspaper
First and foremost you must tea stain or coffee stain the sheets. Start by cutting the sheets into strips. I found that if I cut a slit at the top I could finish it off by tearing it the length of the sheet. This creates a ragged look which is perfect for our mummy. Don’t worry if the strips are not perfect in size, it won’t show later on. Place the strips in a large pot that has very strong tea or coffee. Soak and check often. When they get the color you desire remove. Hang dry in the shower. If you see any coffee grounds or tea leaves on the strips, leave them there. It adds to the dirty look.
Next you will want to cut your foam board down. I used a toe-pincher coffin type shape. Basically you need it wide at the top for the chest area and thinner down at the feet. In the middle of the top, where the head goes, I cut out a hole to place the neck of the wig-head in. I found that this helped when it came time to wrap the mummy. If you prefer you can attach the head at the top and anchor it down with masking tape.
Then you will need to roll the newspaper to make arms and legs. Hot glue these down to the foam board.
Now its time to wrap her up! Have your glue gun ready and I highly recommend starting with the head. It is the hardest part of the entire wrapping process. You can opt to cover the entire face. I however left her eyes and mouth visible. Either way will work. To apply the strips add just a dab of hot glue to one edge of the strip. Then wrap. If a portion of the strip sticks up funny try to cover it with the next strip, otherwise add a touch of glue to that spot and press it down.
Once your done with the head begin down at the feet and work your way up. Try to be sure that each strip is tight, only hot glue the ends of the strips, and overlap every strip as you work your way up. This helps avoid any pink or blue peeking through. Use all your strips. If you have any extras, use the leftovers in any spots where color is peeking through. Then apply any leftovers to the chest and feet area so that they are more prominent.
Your mummy should now look like this:
If you covered her face you may want to paint a face on, or leave it blank. If you left her face uncovered be sure to paint her eyes and lips in your choice of color. You may also want to paint an ankh or any of the many other Ancient Egyptian symbols available, just work within your artistic ability.
She can be used indo ors or out. If you place her outside I would recommend not leaving her out all night as the dew or any possible overnight showers could ruin her. When the season is over, cover her in a trash bag and seal super tight.
Enjoy your mummy and have a blessed Samhain!

That’s awesome! You can have your own Tutankamon! Imagine drawing several Egyptian symbols along the body, how cool would it be? Loved it.
This is a great idea! I’ve always wanted a mummy. And we have a front porch that it would look great on. Thanks for the project!!!redpot@comcast.net
