Arty update

I just started my very first art journal! I’ve been inspired by so many arty bloggers, like ArtyEm at Creative*Art*Journal , DeeDee at pinch me to see if you’re dreaming, Amy at Magical Musings , and Rose (Walk in the Woods) at What I Made Today.

This is my very first pages. They aren’t completely done, as there is still a bit of space I want to add to, and things I want to do to the flowers to complete them. I’m quite happy with it so far!

The stripe at the top left says “Live Boldly”. The bottom right quote is by Jim Morrison and says, “Where is your will to be weird?”. The girl in the pic is Frankensteined together from a few different magazine pictures – the head from one, the dress from another, and the legs from a third. The star was added from another. I painted the flowers on with acrylic paints, though they aren’t exactly finished yet. A border of dashes and spirals goes around the edges, drawn in silver pen.

The book is an old children’s book that I’ve started putting black gesso on. I’ve primed 4 or 5 pages in the gesso, and I couldn’t wait any longer to start on it.

I had started with white gesso, and couldn’t think of a thing to do with any of it. I wasn’t inspired at all. Then I found a nice big bottle of black gesso at the craft store and that started everything going! I have a ton of ideas and pieces cut from magazines to use in collages.

Once it’s finished, I’ll try to scan it so it’s easier to see. I can’t wait to do more!

Suzie, you can get the black gesso at a craft or art store. I found a small bottle of white gesso by where the craft glues were. Then I looked where the art stuff was, by the oil paints and they had a huge economy size white gesso, plus mid-size bottles of white and the black. I LOVE gesso! It strengthens your paper, covers everything up if you are reusing a book, and if you make a mistake, it’ll cover that up, too!
