Mrs. B. Reads…. Wild Magic

I want to share with you a secret that civilized humans have forgotten for thousands of years. The Earth is full of magic, wild magic that hums in all natural things and flows together like rivers connecting everything in one magnificent song

So starts the book “Wild Magic: Celebrating the Earth Throughout the Year“. Written by Lichen June and illustrated by Kerry V. McQuaid, the book is described as “A Coloring and Creativity Book for All Ages”, and it really is. From the introduction, to the beautifully written explanation of the pagan sabbats, to descriptions of the elements, each page is matched with corresponding illustrations just begging the reader to open up a box of crayons, markers or paints.
I fist saw this book online, as I searched for current information on pagan parenting to share on my blog. I stumbled across the website for the book and saw this:
Each sabbat and element has a 2 page spread. One page has an explanation of the sabbat, complete with information on how it’s celebrated and a bit of information on the god and goddess. On the second page is the illustration complete with seasonal or appropriate plants, animals, insects and objects. The drawings are just detailed enough to be works of art on their own, but not overly detailed in a way that would make it harder for younger children to be able
to color them in.
And as a bonus, the element illustrations can be cut out (I’d photocopy the pages before trying it – I’m not cutting these pages up!) and put together on a background (such as a poster board) to create a pentagram which will be over 2 1/2 feet in diameter! What a fantastic project to do with your children!
In fact, this is one of the best books that I have found for sharing with your kids. I spent time with Miss M. going over the Lammas page. Though at first she didn’t understand what some of the story meant, it was the perfect opportunity to explain and discuss Lammas and what it means to me and the changes of the earth during this season.
Miss M. was so enthralled after our discussion, she quickly read through the rest of the book, and was inspired to write her own review of the book! She called the illustrator, Kerry V. McQuaid, “very accurate” because, as she had noticed, ” when illustrating the snowflakes on the Winter Solstice page, no two are alike“. She also stated that “This book is educational because it teaches you about sabbats. I give this book 2 thumbs up.”

What an amazing book, I've been wondering how to start incorporating the sabbats into my 3 year old's lexicon. We have Circle Round in our library but she doesn't have the patience just yet for all that text. It's hard to pick which one I'd be most interested in but I'd have to say that Moon Magic: History and Secrets of the Divine Mother is probably the better choice for our family right now.

  13. Okay…great blog by the way. I love reading anything about celebrating the seasons. I am all about seasons and holidays…always have been. To me, they are what make each passing year so exciting for me…looking ahead to what comes next. So I have never actually entered any kind of giveaway before. But I figure no time like the present…so count me in. As for what book of the 2 I'd prefer…it is hands down the Moon Magic book. I adore the Moon and read everything I can about it's history and lore that I can find. One of my favorite books is the Moon Watcher's Companion. So please count me in Mrs. B! Thank you! :o )

I'd DEFINITLY be interested in Moon Magic: History and Secrets of the Divine Mother!! I really like how the text is written so plainly that even the youngest of young can comprehend. Even if the parents aren't totally into the Path this book seems to have a good deal of 'good teachings' for every one. I, too, give it "2 thumbs up!" :) And can I say that my anniversary is August 12! Hehehe! :P Oh, and I'm a follower of your blog!

What a beautiful book–it would be a nice accompaniment to Starhawk's Circle Round. I dug a little deeper and visited both the writer's and illustrator's pages. Lichen is working on a book that sounds revolutionary and wonderful: The Teenager's Guide to Sex and Death: and Other Things Adults Lie to Themselves and You About. I'd like to read it–although the upcoming co-authored books sound divine. :-) I'll be twittering about the giveaway. Enjoy reading your tweets.Cheers!Auntie Meme

  51. Geek Wife says:

I agree, Fall is my favorite time of year. The sights, the smells, the food!It is a toss up between Samhain and Mabon for me.

  52. Favorite Sabbat? Samhain!By the way, it totally got me that you posted your "Monday Mutterings" 25 minutes ago. It is almost Tuesday here. LOL

  53. WillowMoon says:

My favorite Holiday and sabbat are one in the same so to say. It is Samhain and Halloween.

  54. Bridgett says:

Okay…my favorite sabbat. Well…I haven't experienced many of them. :) The only ones I've celebrated thus far, because I'm still so new to the craft, are Beltane, Litha, and Lammas. Midsummer was probably my favorite of those three. But truly, you can't go wrong with any of them. They're all beautiful. I think I'll really enjoy Mabon too, as that's my favorite time of the year. XOXO
