Marie Laveau 5 Holy Waters for a Peaceful Home

As winter sneaks up on us (or comes crashing in, as the case may be), it can be hard to keep up the peaceful, positive feelings in your home.  Mild seasonal blues, lack of sunlight, freezing temperatures, and if you’re like me, cold, creaky bones!

One small way you can keep your home full of positive vibrations, and keep those negative forces out is a quick spray of Marie Laveau’s Five (or Seven!) Holy Waters.
There’s no actual evidence that this recipe was actually created or used by Marie Laveau (or evidence that it wasn’t); quite possibly the formula was just named after her to add a bit more punch.  It’s occasionally called by the name Marie Laveau’s Peace Water, which is made the same way (not to be confused with plain “peace water”, which is a blue, fragranced water and oil mix, though they can be used in a similar fashion).
5 Holy Waters
  • Holy Water
  • Rain Water
  • Spring Water (bottled spring water is acceptable)
  • River Water   (lake water can be substituted, but use a moving body of water)
  • Ocean Water
7 Holy Waters
  • Holy Water
  • Rain Water
  • Spring Water
  • River Water
  • Ocean Water
  • Florida Water
  • Alcohol (traditionally whiskey or rum)
Mix equal parts of all ingredients together and store in a  jar with a lid.  Pour around the entry ways of your home to encourage visitors to be peaceful and to repel negative people or energies from entering your home.  Alternately, store in a spray bottle and  spray around the household to encourage peaceful, friendly feelings.  Be careful not to spray on anything that might stain, especially if you are using 7 Holy Waters, which might contain colorings from the ingredients.

Hmmm…Ocean Water. That is a bit hard to find in Minnesota. Do you think Lake Water would do? (Though they are all frozen solid, so I am not sure just how I would get it!)

I think if you asked different people this, you might get different answers, but I'd say that lake water could substitute the river water, but not the ocean water.I also wanted to add, on a similar note, that I've been asked before if the Holy Water needs to be from a church or could it just be blessed water. In my opinion, it needs to be from a church.Of course, you can put together a magical water using water you've blessed yourself or your HP has blessed, but it won't be Marie Laveau water. Will it work the same? Chances are yes, as it's the intent as much as the ingredients – but it's not quite the same to me. Sort of like mixing dried cranberries and brand flakes. It's good for breakfast, but it isn't Raisin Bran.

  3. River_Owl> I live in MN too. While it is indeed hard to get Ocean Water directly, it's not hard to find someone that goes to Florida for at least part of the winter. I have friends who are always happy to bring me back a little bottle of something!

  4. River Owl says:

Well River Water is as easy to find as Lake water here, so no need to substitute. Someday I will see the ocean again. I will just have to collect some water then. I actually collect Holy Water when I go on trips. My DH thinks it is a strange thing to collect, but one never knows when St. Louis Cathedral (NOLA) or Westminster Cathedral Holy Water might come in handy!

  5. Can I melt snow for rain water Anyhow the ocean is a 7 hour drive on good roads. Then when it comes to rum. I might need to have a few swigs from it.Coffee is on.

Great reminder! I'm out of my witchy waters…time to get to work!I'm wondering…do you use Holy Water from a church? Or do you create your own? I create my own, usually from rain water collected during a storm or spring water collected from my nearby fresh-water spring. Into this water is a bit of sea salt, sometimes a drop of rose essential oil, then it is cleansed & charged. Poof! Holy Water!!

  8. mrsb says:

I do create my own holy waters for certain things. But as I said in the previous comment, I only use holy water from a church for this particular recipe.

  9. There is a song about Marie Laveau and my 6 and 7 year old children know the words by heart. I never knew of her until I heard the song, and then I had to find out more about her. Interesting woman she was. I was wondering about lake water, as I live in the desert, but then it occurred to me our tap water comes from a lake so problem solved I suppose and it is moving when it comes out of the faucet. :)

I know this is an older article, but would like to chime in. If you mean holy water from a Christian church, it is only 'holy' because it was prayed over. And it really is just a symbolic ritual for purification in the spiritual realm. Which you can do on your own, because the Christian God hears prayers from everyone. :) and for ocean water, couldn't you just add sand and salt to the water, mix it up then strain it?

  11. mrsb says:

Hi Sisterlisa! Many people have thoughts on the Holy Water for things like this. I personally only use holy water from a church, because that's what was called for in the recipe. This is one of very few recipes where I stay completely true to what it calls for.As for the ocean water, I have to disagree that adding sand and salt to the water is good enough for this recipe. There's life in ocean water that just can't be replicated. There are several different recipes for other "peace" waters that aren't so specific and who's ingredients can be swapped around (in my opinion) a little more easily.

I just made this recipe today (yay!). I was wondering, since it is a full moon today, would it add a bit of extra oomph to leave it out tonight to abosrb a bit of lunar energy?

  13. mrsb says:

Kestral: Definitely! Leaving any water out under the full moon gives it some oomph, and it's sure to boost this one!
