This past week I took a netcation. It was sorely needed after a week of arguing with folks online over a variety of things, needing to get a ton of things done (none of which actually got done), feeling stressed out and overwhelmed. During my netcation, I read four books, got coffee with a friend, cooked a few great meals and contacted a few places in my community about volunteer opportunities (which are harder to join in than I'd ever thought they'd be!). I also stressed about taking a … [Read more...]
Covered in Light Responds to Naysayers of Pagan Women and Veiling

On Monday I posted what I thought was a simple blog post about supporting Pagan women who veil - and all women who choose to do so by choice, no matter what their religious affiliation. To say that some folks responded in a less than supportive way would be an understatement. Via both blog comments and my facebook page, I was basically accused of supporting the oppression of women, supporting a religion (assumably the Islamic faith) that we are "at war with" (I guessed I missed the part … [Read more...]
Pagan Women Organize Covered in Light: A Day to Support All Women Who Veil By Choice

Friday, September 21 has been declared Covered in Light International Day. This event has been started by the group Covered in Light, a group of Pagan/Polytheist women who choose to cover their hair as a part of their religious observance. As stated on their website, " In no way are we oppressed, objectified, suppressed, or made to feel like a second class citizen. The covering of our hair is a sacred act of devotion to our chosen Deities and therefore is approached with devotion … [Read more...]
Mercury in Retrograde Survival Guide

According to the Glossary of New Speak, the definition of Mercury in retrograde is, An (sic) regularly occurring, astrological event that gives New Agers an excuse for getting fired, wrecking their car, breaking a leg, or having an overall shitty day. While this isn't, of course, the real definition of the term, it is, in fact, how many Pagans/Pagan-adjacent folks feel about this time - and I pretty much include myself in that group. Knowledge is power, though, so lets take a step-by-step … [Read more...]
A Pagan Housewife’s Garden

We have a fairly small yard, much of it on a slant that keeps us from doing much with it. We have no back yard; the bulk of our property is on that slanting hill on the side, facing the road. Not exactly the best set-up for large, lush, rambling gardens. We have, however, adapted, and created a row of square foot raised beds that produce an amazing amount of edible, culinary and magical herbs and some of the best produce you can sink your teeth into. I can't actually take much credit for … [Read more...]
A Pagan Blessing Bowl

This past full moon I had several things I wanted to set out under the powerful rays of the full moon. As I placed them all in my blessing bowl, I realized that I'd mentioned this tool several times before, but I hadn't ever really posted about it. My blessing bowl is a tool that I've been using for several years. It's basically a wooden bowl in which I place a variety of things that I want to ask deity to bless, or that I want to charge in the light of the sun or the moon (depending on … [Read more...]
Modesty, a “laughable non-problem” for Pagans?

I admit, I read the Friendly Atheist blog on a regular basis. While I'm obviously not an atheist, I enjoy reading another point of view, especially when it's as well written and thought-provoking as this blog tends to be. Today, however, the post was called "The Ugly Side of Modesty, written by Amanda. It's main focus was a website called Secret Keeper Girl, a Christian website that was created in 2009 "in an effort to present a petition to both the Council of Fashion Designers of America … [Read more...]
Blessed Summer Solstice

To all who celebrate, a blessed Summer Solstice! Or a blessed Winter Solstice for those in the Southern Hemisphere. Every Summer Solstice (also known as Litha) our family drives down to the ocean - the place where I find the perfect balance of the elements: sun, sand, gentle ocean breeze and water. While we are there, I bottle up several jars of ocean water, adding a few found shells and smooth rocks found along the shore line. One jar will stay on my altar throughout the … [Read more...]
Bruschetta Chicken and Pasta

Summer time is almost here, and soon the tiny, green tomatoes on my plants will be bursting into red deliciousness. This is one of my go-to summer pasta recipes for all those fresh tomatoes coming in. And here's a household witchery tip to use while you are combining the herbs for the seasoning mix: in a separate bowl, add a teaspoon of the dried garlic, onion, basil, black pepper and salt. Mix them together, then sprinkle them over the outside of your front door. Let them sit … [Read more...]
Pagan Community Support: Kyrja’s Kreative Korner

Chase Bank and LivingSocial are giving up to 12 individual grants of $250,000 to 12 small businesses via their "Mission: Small Business" campaign. One small business that's up for the grant is Kyrja's Kreative Korner from New Port Richey, Florida. You might know the owner of those wonderful Pagan children's books about Rupert the bunny who learns about the Sabbats with his friends. What you may not know is that Kyrja also runs a small business that puts a lot of effort into supporting her … [Read more...]
