Herb of the Month: Lavender

Photo by Lexipexi, via Wikimedia Commons   I’ve decided that I’d like to start a new monthly spot, featuring an herb or a food that can be used in many magical and mundane ways.  This list was one I shared a year or so ago, but I thought it would be an easy way to slide into sharing, lol! Remember if you are going to cook with an herb, or use it in a homemade beauty product, to either use something you’ve grown yourself, purchase from trusted local … [Read more...]

A Pagan Housewife’s Garden

We have a fairly small yard, much of it on a slant that keeps us from doing much with it.  We have no back yard; the bulk of our property is on that slanting hill on the side, facing the road.  Not exactly the best set-up for large, lush, rambling gardens.  We have, however, adapted, and created a row of square foot raised beds that produce an amazing amount of edible, culinary and magical herbs and some of the best produce you can sink your teeth into.  I can't actually take much credit for … [Read more...]

Bruschetta Chicken and Pasta

Summer time is almost here, and soon the tiny, green tomatoes on my plants will be bursting into red deliciousness.  This is one of my go-to summer pasta recipes for all those fresh tomatoes coming in.   And here's a household witchery tip to use while you are combining the herbs for the seasoning mix: in a separate bowl, add a teaspoon of the dried garlic, onion, basil, black pepper and salt.  Mix them together, then sprinkle them over the outside of your front door.  Let them sit … [Read more...]

Herb Hunting in Your Neighborhood, Part 2: Plantain

Many folks here the word "plantain" and think of those banana-like fruit.  Others think of this wonderful little herb that I will bet you have a ton of right in your own yard! There are two basic types of plantain to find in your neighborhood (though there are over 200 types of the plant!): broad leaf and narrow leaf.  If you have a yard that you let grow naturally, you almost are guaranteed to have a plantain plant or two.  I've read some sources that claim up to 1/3 of most yards are … [Read more...]

First Garden Update for 2011!

Though the weather in NJ isn't really cooperating with getting too many new plants in the ground, we did manage to weather over some of last years herbs.  They are doing really well, and we are already starting to dry some.  Here's a little of what's going on in the garden so far: The mugwort is nearly 4 foot tall already.  This is my very favorite plant.  Hard to kill, lol!  Mugwort has so many uses, and is so easy to grow, there's just no reason not to have it somewhere in our garden … [Read more...]

Garden Update

Mr. B. has been busy starting seeds under the fluorescent grow light rig that he built.  It's in the girl cave, so I get to watch the seeds sprouting!  It's pretty darn cool.   Here is a little look at what's going on seed-wise so far:   Thyme and basil are coming up quite nicely. As are the rue and rosemary plants. And bee balm and mugwort!  These are first timers in our garden this year, so we'll see how they go! The tomato seeds have just got … [Read more...]

Jars of Stuff

This year in our garden, we've done a ton of herbs. A lot of them are primarily for culinary use, but many have medicinal properties as well. I've always been into herbs, and have a huge (I'm not kidding, the thing is ginormous) grimoire filled with everything you could ever want to read about herbs - how to grow, culinary uses, medicinal uses, the history of it's use, cosmetic uses, and all sorts of recipes. The one thing that I haven't done much with is putting all the knowledge to work. … [Read more...]

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Thanks to the days and days of rain in NJ, it grows quite well, thank you! We've got a ton of different things growing this year: chamomile, tons and tons of tomatoes: blueberries! I won a gift card a while back from gardenpunks for an online plant shop.  With it, I got this awesome blueberry bush, which is already producing fruit!  It's just a tiny baby bush, so I can't wait to see what it does next year! Our onions were one of the first things ready to pick and use. … [Read more...]

Daily Update 9-22-08

I've had so much fun doing a running blog entry with updates, I thought I'd do it again today. I thought about adding a "twitter" widget to my blog, but it doesn't allow you to do pictures, and I love throwing pictures in! Since it's the first day of fall, after the kids got on their buses, I thought it would be a good day to clean up the yard a bit. I gathered up all the odds and ends that go with the grill and smoker and deposited them in the garage for Mr. B. to go threw. I gathered up … [Read more...]

Garden Update

I took some pictures of the garden. We are in various stages of bloom. The tomatoes are loaded down, but most of the fruit is green right now. I can't wait for it all to get ripe! Here are a couple of pictures of our square foot gardens. There are tomatoes in the back, green peppers and jalepenos in the next row, and in front of those are a variety of herbs and carrots. The herbs were planted on a staggered schedule, so we'd have fresh herbs ready all the way through the summer. That … [Read more...]
