A 2016 third-party run is a “suicide mission” – here’s a better option

A 2016 third-party run is a “suicide mission” – here’s a better option May 18, 2016

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus told Fox News over the weekend that any attempt at a third-party run from anti-Trump conservatives would be a “suicide mission for our country” that could wreck the conservative movement for the next 100 years.

Why such dire predictions?

“What it means is that you’re throwing down not just eight years of the White House, but potentially 100 years on the Supreme Court and wrecking this country for many generations,” Priebus told “Fox News Sunday”. “And so, I think that’s the legacy these folks will leave behind.”

The next President may have the opportunity to nominate as many as three additional Court justices, a move that could stack the highest court in the land for generations in favor of whichever party wins the upcoming election.

Recent sweeping Court decisions have proven that Preibus’ concerns are not without merit. The Court now has the authority to ignore and supersede the will of individual states and strike down thousands of state laws with one swing of the gavel.

This is not the system of checks and balances the Founders had in mind. The Court has amassed for itself unprecedented amounts of power, and the only way to remove that power is via an Article V Convention of States.

Only a Convention of States can propose the necessary constitutional amendments that restore the system the Founders imagined. Because it is called and controlled by the states, a Convention of States can impose the kinds of restrictions on the federal government that they will never impose on themselves. Limitations to the power and jurisdiction of the Courts, the President, and Congress are all on the table.
