The Little Placard on the Wall: When a Picture Requires a Thousand Words

When I go to an art museum, I always look at the little placard on the wall before I look at the work of art. I know; art is supposed to stand on its own. It shouldn't matter to me on first viewing whether a painting is a Degas or a Picasso or a Rembrandt; I should take it for what it is, first, before looking into its pedigree.I can't help it. At best I glance at the painting, read the placard, and then step back and try to savor it. (Well, usually. Some paintings are downright … [Read more...]

Why Make Photographs?

I’ve been doing more photography recently; and I thought I’d say a few words about why I’m attracted to photography, and what I get out of it.First of all, I’m no good at drawing.I once made a high school art teacher quite angry with me by saying that I’d never been any good at drawing; and he was right, of course.  If that’s your attitude, you’re never going to improve.  But now, three-and-a-half decades later, I think it’s safe for me to admit that I’ve never been any good at drawing.  … [Read more...]

Dog Tired

I've just completed the second day of a three-day series of all day meetings. And these aren't the kind of meetings where I can sit in the back and listen with half-an-hear for things that concern me; they are the kind of meetings where I need to be paying close attention throughout. So, here's a picture. … [Read more...]

Review: Adobe Lightroom

I mentioned last week that I'm getting back into photography, and that I'd picked up a copy of Adobe Lightroom. And I have to say, Lightroom rocks.Once upon a time it was the case that Photoshop was the tool of choice for professional finishing of digital photographs. It was simply what you used if you could afford the "Photoshop tax", because it had all the tools you needed. You could crop images, fix (some) exposure issues, adjust the perspective, dodge and burn, change the degree … [Read more...]

On the Making of Faces

Recently I decided to jump back into photography as an active hobby, and my first step was to get my collection of digital photos in order. I used to be very good about cataloging everything, but in the last few years I've been doing the bare minimum as I was engaged in other pursuits and I didn't much like the tools I was using.Consequently, my first step was to get a copy of Adobe Lightroom and have it catalog my collection: over 22,000 photos taken since the fall of 1997. As I was … [Read more...]

The Dogmat saw Pictures, Pictures Everywhere

The Dogmat has been renewing his interest in photography recently, and has come across a number of pertinent articles.13 Exercises for Photographers That Can Help Jump-Start Creativity: The Dogmat will be taking himself for walks in the future, camera in paw, and he can use a little help getting back into the game. Some of these look like a lot of fun. (Note: "exercise" means making photographs subject to certain constraints, not calisthenics. Although the Dogmat could use those as … [Read more...]

The Eight Types of Photographers You’ll Find in the Wild

Alan Steadman has compiled a kind of bird-watcher's guide for photographers. I'd like to say that I'm the Recluse or the Non-Photographer Friend, but I suspect I'm just this guy, you know? … [Read more...]
