Proving Global Warming

Proving Global Warming August 30, 2016

Or not.  Over here, the Washington Post draws links between the Louisiana floods we’ve not heard much about and what we should think about Global Warming.  Over here, the always enjoyable Michael Flynn reminds us that most of these weather catastrophes we hear about have happened before.  Sometimes far worse than we’re seeing now.

One little trick I’ve caught is the tendency meteorologists have of sliding ‘historic’ in when what they mean is ‘as bad as really bad times in the past’, instead of ‘the worst in history.’  This goes along with that trend of weather reporters who say we are at ‘near’ record temperatures.  If you think about it, being near record temperature doesn’t mean any more than almost winning a race.

Don’t get me wrong.  As I’ve said before, I absolutely accept the reality of climate change.  Whenever I don’t see glaciers outside my windows, I’m reminded that the climate changes.  I just realize that climate studies, like anything under the sun, are able to be used for purposes that have little to do with science.
