The Indians and the Cubs

The Indians and the Cubs October 23, 2016

Who’d have of thunk it?  I’m a bit torn.   I’m really a Cincinnati Reds fan, which means I’m looking for a team that wins this year.  Being open for choices during the Series, I should follow the Indians.  In addition to giving me a chance to thumb my nose at the PC police, they are a home town team.  My family, from Akron, tended to follow Cleveland sports, especially the Browns.  Which brings us back to needing to follow a team that wins.  Since the Cavs broke Cleveland’s long drought, it would be nice to see a second victory for the hometown in the same year.

On the other hand, you have the Cubs.  Possessing one of the most famous sports curses of all time, this is a team that has redefined bad luck over the years.  I know atheists who are willing to concede the possibility of the supernatural to explain the last hundred years of Cubs seasons.  They haven’t won a series since Teddy Roosevelt was in office.  It’s been two world wars, the dawning of the Nuclear age, the rise and fall of the Cold War, and the advent of reality TV for them to finally look like they have a chance.  And that’s because the team they’re up against is from Cleveland.

So I don’t know where my loyalties will be.   I’ll probably watch it more than I do most Series.  Which means more than the last couple games.  We’ll see.  At least it’s something that gets our country talking together.  It seems we have too few culturally uniting events any more, and the tale of two losing teams finally having a chance to win could be a story that gives us a welcome break from the scary stories too common for this time of year.
