Hamblin and Peterson on Rescuing the Dead

This is another article that was inspired/provoked by the recent controversy about the Latter-day Saint practice of vicarious baptism for the deceased. 

Our own title for it was “Rescuing the Dead.”  In it, we try to demonstrate — and, of course, very much more could be said about this topic than a limit of 700-800 words will allow — that the idea that the living can and should do something for those who have died is very old and very widespread.
