“US and THEM: Religious Rivalry in America”

By Norman Rockwell

I was pleased and a bit surprised to see an advertisement, just prior to the morning session of General Conference today, for the film US and THEM: Religious Rivalry in America.  I had not expected it.

The film was created by the Bryan Hall and Jack Donaldson, in conjunction with Randy Paul — friends of mine, and associates in The World Table and the Foundation for Religious Diplomacy.

The DVD of the film is available from Deseret Book:

I am a convert to the Church, joining a little over ten years ago. My family is from Southeast Texas and ardent Born Again Christians. I experienced a great deal of persecution from my family, but, after a while of trying to be a good example, my father and I now talk about what I believe. I must admit that I never thought I would see the day when my father would say such moving things about my faith and what it has done for me.

I personally believe, when the tempests and earthquakes begin to rage, many of our brothers and sisters in the South will join us in defending the faith and values of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many of them are great people!

My favorite Peterson quote is of God the Father looking down on a high priest’s group and saying, “Come look, the high priests are discussing theology. Aren’t they cute?” I don’t think he is so happy when we are having contention with those of other religions. Often they are at fault; often we are at fault. Most often we are both to blame. We need to remember he said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” I can’t wait to see this film.
