On that federal judge’s recent rulings concerning same-sex marriage in Utah

Clinging to guns, religion, and antipathy to anybody different from them, the Americans of flyover country (such as the typical specimens above) were made to be ruled over by morally superior federal magistrates

“On the Morning of Christ’s Nativity”

John Milton, among the greatest Christian writers of all time

If you have a few minutes and the willingness to tackle a relatively challenging literary text, here is an annotated edition of the poetic meditation "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity," by one of the greatest figures in the history of English literature, John Milton (d. 1674): http://www.dartmouth.edu/~milton/reading_room/nativity/ I have an English professor friend -- a very serious thinker -- who believes, in fact, that Milton is even … [Read more...]

For Christmas Eve

"Each of us is an innkeeper who decides if there's room for Jesus!" (Elder Neal A. Maxwell)

Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.Behold, I come unto my own, to fulfill all things which I have made known unto the children of men from the foundation  of the world, and to do the will, both of the Father and of the Son—o … [Read more...]

A bottom line, for me, on same-sex marriage

There will always be those who yearn, nostalgically but unrealistically, for the supposedly good old days when skies were "blue."

I read with interest this morning a comment from a formerly-believing Latter-day Saint.  On the matter of same-sex marriage (to which he is enthusiastically committed), he pledged to try to treat opponents of the redefinition of marriage civilly, despite his conviction that our view proceeds from hatred and bigotry, is evil, and does incalculable harm. I appreciate the candor, and I return it. I pledge to continue to treat proponents of the … [Read more...]
