“A happy family is but an earlier heaven.”  (John Bowring, d. 1872)

I was able to join in the blessing of my nephew’s new baby girl Emma today, in the Santa Gertrudes Ward in Whittier.  Afterwards, we enjoyed lunch and good conversation with him, his wife, my sister-in-law, and others at his home, in the house where my parents used to live.

Then, before we left the general Whittier area, my wife and I visited the graves of my parents and of my paternal grandparents at Rose Hills Memorial Park.  My grandfather died before I was born.  But I think I can remember my grandmother, who died when I was five.  I recall a somewhat breathy and weak old woman’s voice, with a thick Norwegian accident.  (She came to the United States when she was about eighteen.)
