I’m not particularly enthused with the idea of abolishing Sunday School.  I served for more than eight years on the Church’s Gospel Doctrine writing committee, generating curriculum material for the Sunday School.  I’ve spent much of my adult life teaching Sunday School, my absolute favorite among Church callings, and, in fact, that’s what I’m doing now.  Moreover, I don’t think, on the whole, that Latter-day Saints are suffering from a surfeit of knowledge about the scriptures and our history.

That said, it’s absolutely the case that our Sundays can easily become, and often are, hectic and crammed full of meetings.  Far removed from the day of rest that the Sabbath is scripturally designed to be.  Leaving little time for scripture study, reading, and reflection, little time for visits and for family.

Sometimes I hear about “Mormon burn-out.”  I’m not sure whether this is a widespread problem or not.  But, if it is, non-restful Sundays may be among the causes.

What do you think?  Is there a problem?  How can we improve our observance — and our opportunity for observance — of the Sabbath?
