One convert’s perspective:

Incidentally, late on Friday night my wife and I ran into two missionaries in the Altstadt (the “Old City”) of Erfurt as they were returning to their apartment not far from the Domplatz (Cathedral Plaza). One was from Utah, and the other was from Montana.
We had a nice chat. At one point, I asked the elder from Montana how the work was going. I expected him to tell me that it was slow and difficult. I know what that’s like; I served in German-speaking Switzerland. But he surprised me very much by saying that the work is going quite well. People had told him that Germany would be hard, but he hasn’t found it to be so. He was beaming with enthusiasm, assuring me that the work is flourishing here.
I certainly hope so. And I hope that this might represent the beginning of a trend.
I’ve always thought that there was still hope for Europe, that people would realize sooner or later that material possessions and sheer materialism itself simply cannot bring fulfillment, peace, or comfort in times of sorrow and loss. A spiritual vacuum eventually cries out to be filled. Could it be that the time has come? May it be so!
