Nearly ten years ago, I think, I was over in California for a public lecture in Sacramento.  I hadn’t been there in many years — basically, not since I had come for “Junior Statesmen” events at the state capitol building when I was in high school.

So, just before taking me to the airport, my host gave me a quick tour of the city.

We drove by such sites as Sutter’s Fort and . . . the state capitol.  I was already quite familiar with it, because that’s where we used to hold our meetings.  Nonetheless, as we approached it, my host was pointing out various things on both sides of the car and then, without missing a beat or changing the tone of his voice at all, he pointed to the capitol building and (with the California legislature plainly in mind) identified it to me as “the headquarters of the state’s largest criminal syndicate.”

I still laugh, thinking about it.
