The church at Helgheim
Helgheim Church, on Lake Jølster
Until she left Norway at about the age of eighteen, this was my grandmother’s church, to which she and her family  had to row a boat or, when possible, walk on ice. Most of the family names represented in the cemetery — e.g., Årdal, Ripe, Kjøsnes, Myklebust, Svidal, Søgnesand, Lunde, and so forth — also appear in my family line.  (Wikimedia Commons)
