I’ve always loved the “mummy portraits” from the Fayyum, near the area discussed in the article below. They humanize the ancient residents of the area, who look like people that you might meet today. This girl’s image was created during the Roman period, between about 120 and 150 AD. (Image from Wikimedia Commons.)

 

The article’s title is a bit too grand; the discovery comes from just one site in Middle Egypt.  Still, it’s interesting, and it promises further discoveries in the future:
