2015 has been one hell of a year. So many incidences, so many opportunities to engage, so many open doors for social change, so many tears. This year has probably been one of the most challenging years for those who are pushing for social justice, and there have been a lot of areas of need [Read More...]

Becoming a Great Mother by Reluctant Spider

Image from Samuel Borges Photography, Courtesy of Shutterstock.

At the time of writing I’m 6 months into growing the physical vessel of a future human-beast-god, a little boy. Conceived on purpose near Summer Solstice, he’s due to make a Malkuth appearance not long after Spring Equinox. Apparently I wanted to play this one close to the archetypal chest because what is happening is a sacred and mythic story – in my body, my family, my psyche. As days turned into weeks of pregnancy, I realized I needed to prepare within myself as much as I needed a nursery. As I began rummaging through who I thought I was, I realized how uncomfortable I was with dwelling within one of the obvious basics: Mother. [Read more...]

Magic Out of the Land of the South

Out the window of my plane going home

Inherently connecting with the land of my mother’s family has led me to a place of deeper understanding about the magic that comes from my people. Assimilating into mainstream Wiccan culture means that much of my own own cultural magic became of little value within the larger construct. For years I focused on the magical practices taught to me by the teachers I have been grateful to have, and ignored the magic of my people that I had been distanced from. [Read more...]

Letter of Gratitude

pumpkins-821805_640

Thanksgiving is a traditional time for family gatherings, relaxation, charity walks, protests, pre-Black Friday online shopping, and gratitude. As a fall holiday, Thanksgiving  gives opportunities  to embrace the positive.  It is also a good time to reflect on how to turn the negative into positive in one’s life.  As a witch of color,  a creative [Read More...]

Renewal and Rebirth; My Path to Justice

Pagan Alliance Festival 2015 by Stephanie Kjer

I have recently been thinking about some of my past client’s, the work I do and my own sense of justice. The kind of justice that motivates me to continue the journey of such harsh work. I feel it appropriate to share something I wrote earlier this year…. a reflection of sorts. (Reprinted from Sage Woman [Read More...]

Personal Musings on Samhain

This time of year breaths opportunity into the overwhelming feelings of loss that deaths leave behind. While Samhain turns the wheel once more towards the darkest time of the year, it is a reminder that the wheel continues to turn and the practice of release allows for healing and growth. My Wicca, My Life, My Way – A Story

Incredible cast of A Black Woman Speaks, at Pantheacon, directed by Luna Pantera

All this context leads to something very important to me. I am Wiccan. And I am also a woman of color with a ancestral history and culture that is a part of my life on a everyday basis, just like my spirituality. Wicca became a foundation that I was able to build on, learn through, and expand to include all of me. [Read more...]

Grief: A Working of Love

fist-681847_1920

I have not written any blessings or workings this year for the 30 Day Real Black History Challenge yet, and I am already nearing the end. (Thank goodness for encores). I have come to understand that my own blockage in doing this has to do with the intense amount of grief I am holding right [Read More...]

PantheaCon 2015; Pain, Healing Work, Allyship in Action and Coalition Building

IMG_0620

Bringing Race to the Table Panel, my experience of the Con changed. I immediately felt like I was holding a fragile balloon in my belly. From that point, through my own tears and those of the people in the audience as they spoke of their triggering, I struggled with the intricate balance of pain and faith in my community. What happened next in this community helped me to hold onto a vision that I believe in, that I need to believe in. [Read more...]

Magical Beginnings Begin Again

2014-12-09 13.50.40

I was initially taught that magic was a candle, some incense, a clear intent, a pentacle disk and a stone or two on a nicely decorated altar. Today I know that my magic needs no tools, and often comes down to my will and my action. Adding the tools help to enhance my methods. The last five years have been a fight for my life and it was that magic that helped me to make it through. [Read more...]
