Parenting is a Magical Act

Parenting is much like magic; It is part experimentation, part training, part education, part tradition, some patience and a whole bunch of hope. I have always found that my biggest manifestations of magic happen with my children. This is not to say that my kids choices are not their own, because they are, but it [Read More…]

Becoming a Great Mother by Reluctant Spider

At the time of writing I’m 6 months into growing the physical vessel of a future human-beast-god, a little boy. Conceived on purpose near Summer Solstice, he’s due to make a Malkuth appearance not long after Spring Equinox. Apparently I wanted to play this one close to the archetypal chest because what is happening is a sacred and mythic story – in my body, my family, my psyche. As days turned into weeks of pregnancy, I realized I needed to prepare within myself as much as I needed a nursery. As I began rummaging through who I thought I was, I realized how uncomfortable I was with dwelling within one of the obvious basics: Mother. [Read more…]

30 Day Real Black History Challenge 2014 – Week Four (#30DayRBHC)

This week’s digest is full of very interesting studies on transgenerational trauma, historical oppression, Nina Simone, Dr. Joy Degruy, Melissa Harris-Perry, “columbusing”, some comedy, racial profiling, Freedom Summer, Angela Davis, and more. It is a power packed week of Black culture, privilege and intersectionality information and sources. And like on the other weeks, I include very personal reflections of culture as well. Enjoy and wait for the encore! [Read more…]

My Kid is Kind of Swedish….. (#30DayRBHC)

This uncovering of ancestral information will be a lifelong process for my son that I will help start with discussions, stories, explanations, and information about who we are and where we come from. The ability to gather knowledge that shines a light on our inner core, gives us access to our ancestral power in a way that isn’t previously imaginable. We are a powerful people, spiritually aligned with the mission of resilience and cultured by the magic of our history. [Read more…]

30 Day Real Black History Challenge 2014 – Week Two (#30DayRBHC)

Exploring topics of culture and intersectionality, such as colorism, beauty, culture, the prison industrial complex, and even the relationship between African and Black. Power packed week full of topics to stretch our understanding of what culture is, and how that plays into privilege, the lack of privilege, intersectionality and ultimately…. spirituality. We are spiritual as a whole being, which includes our experiences within society; one of the very reasons this work is so important for us all. [Read more…]

Pressing the Black Out; Hot Combs, Fear and Culture (#30DayRBHC)

I was conditioned to sit in that chair, stiff as a doll, while a metal comb was racked across my scalp so that my savage curls could be transformed into straight, flowing hair. A reminder that I was not beautiful as I was; only beautiful when I was able to look like something I was not. And when it was time to wash out the whiteness that came at the end of a smoking metal comb, I would dread the hours of combing through my unruly blackness, blow drying, and hot combing it again. A process that would take hours, but would begin to signify my conditioned perception of beauty until I became 36 years old and began to really question who I was underneath the perm, endless amount of hours, and burned flesh. 30 Day Real Black History Challenge Year Two; Opening Credits

So this year, the 30 Day Real Black History Challenge will continue: same time, same bat channel. This year I plan to focus a little more on exploring the concepts of Black culture, and the application of intersectionality to the experiences of Black people past and present. Just the word ‘privilege’ can incite a riot on the discussion boards, and in almost any conversation with others, and so it is one concept I think we should continue to explore over and over again. If we cannot understand what privilege and intersectionality are, then we will not be able to recognize their impact on the various populations of people whom we claim to serve, protect, and care for. Beltane Dreams: The Return of Hope

As a social worker, I encounter what feels like the darkness all the time: poverty, hunger, grief, sadness, drug addiction, and homelessness. And when things are their hardest, I know in my being that the wheel will turn, and spring will come. It is that light that illuminates hope in the darkness. [Read more…]

Kwanzaa in a Pagan Home: My Spiritual, Pride Practice

I am ending this year with pride and culture. I have been hesitant to start the practice of Kwanzaa in my home for some time, not because I did not believe in the value of its practice, but because of…. fear. It is the continuous fear of breaking away from overculture, even though I am Pagan, and a Black woman. [Read more…]
