It’s a sad day for America when we wake up to news like this.

Yesterday afternoon, a deputy and an officer assigned to the Fifth Judicial Drug Task Force in Maryville, Tennessee, received a call about a nearby disturbance.  They helped move the victim to a “safe area,” but as they were moving to cover, a man opened fire on them from the house’s garage.  Moats was struck in the neck, right above his protective vest.

The 32 year old father of three small children named Kenny Moats died from that single shot.

Here are some details about Moats:

  • He worked for the Maryville Police Department since February 2007
  • He was assigned to the Fifth Judicial Drug Task Force as a drug enforcement agent in May 2016
  • He’d been a motor officer for the Maryville Police Department
  • He graduated from Heritage High School in 2002 and Walters State Police Academy
  • He was the president of the Fraternal Order of Police – Bud Allison Memorial Lodge No. 9

Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp described his career as “stellar,” and said “We are humbled by the outpouring of love and support from the community and beyond. We will forever be grateful for the care our community has shown the family of Officer Moats and the law enforcement community. We know this tragedy will bring our community closer together and that will be a lasting legacy of Officer Moats. We just ask that our community continue to pray for the family of Officer Moats and for the men and women in uniform as we go through this trying time.”

Amen.

A Memorial Fund has been set up at Citizens Bank of Blount County in honor of Officer Moats. If you wish to make a donation you can do so at any Citizens Bank of Blount County location or at the Maryville Police Department. Donations need to be made to Kenny Moats Memorial Fund.  Call (865) 380-1361 for more information.
