My Birthday Wish: Support Bowl-a-Thon ’16

Happy birthday to me! Today's my 34th birthday, which means I totally outlived Jesus.I'm not a materialistic person, so I'm not looking for presents. But if you have some spare cash, I'd be happy if you made a donation to Feminist Coffee Hour's Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser for the New York Abortion Access Fund. And if you need a further reason to donate, this cat in a bowtie also wants you to: … [Read more...]

Support Bowl-a-Thon 2016

As long as reproductive choice is under threat in the United States, there'll be a need for the National Abortion Access Bowl-a-Thon.This year, the stakes are especially high, as Catholic hospitals continue to deny critical care to pregnant and miscarrying women, and the Supreme Court will soon hear a case over a dreadful, bad-faith law that effectively end abortion access for most of Texas - and even with the absence of Antonin Scalia, there's no guarantee of how they'll rule.We can't … [Read more...]

Support CFI’s Freethought Rescue Project

In light of the continuing murders of atheists in Bangladesh and the apathy of the Bangladeshi government, the Center for Inquiry has launched a very worthy project: a Freethought Rescue Fund to bring threatened activists to the U.S. or other secular-friendly countries and help them live here in safety. (At least one of the murdered bloggers, Ananta Bijoy Das, had sought a visa to Sweden but was refused.)As CFI announced this week, they've already helped bring over the Bangladeshi author and … [Read more...]

Support the Ada Initiative

If you, like me, are sick and tired of all the bad news that's been coming out of the atheist community lately, here's something you can do to help: support the Ada Initiative, a nonprofit group that seeks to change sexist cultures and increase women's participation and representation.Although their primary focus is on programming and the open-source development community, the Ada Initiative has played a role in fighting sexism in atheism and skepticism, in science fiction/fantasy … [Read more...]

Women in Secularism Attendees’ Letter to the CFI Board

The following letter was originally written by Miri Mogilevsky of Freethought Blogs. As I'm a signatory, I'm reprinting it below. This was sent to the CFI Board of Directors as they prepare to meet this week to discuss the controversy surrounding Dr. Ron Lindsay's opening remarks at the Women in Secularism conference. If you have something to say about this, the CFI Board of Directors can be reached via the Corporate Secretary, Tom Flynn, at tflynn@centerforinquiry.net. If you'd like to, feel … [Read more...]

Women in Secularism Speakers’ Letter to CFI Board

In the aftermath of the unfortunate introduction at Women in Secularism 2, a group of speakers have written and signed a joint letter to the Center for Inquiry's board of directors, detailing their objections to Ron Lindsay's offensive remarks and what they're asking the board to do.I highly recommend reading the full text of the letter, which was posted by Stephanie Zvan and also by Greta Christina, two of the speakers that signed it. I expect it will appear on other speakers' blogs as … [Read more...]

Followup on the Atheists of Bangladesh

In my post on Monday, I said I'd write an update if I found out about anything else that could be done to help the Bangladeshi bloggers imprisoned for their atheism. I have a few more suggestions for how to do that. The International Humanist and Ethical Union is promoting the #HumanistSolidarity hashtag on Twitter for people to show their support, and has a list of ideas for what to say if you contact Bangladesh's embassy in your country. The American Humanist Association is also suggesting … [Read more...]

Bowling for Abortion Access

Since religious-right legislators continue to put insultingly ridiculous obstacles in the path of women seeking abortion - like the latest one, a proposed bill in South Dakota that would specify that the mandatory 72-hour waiting period wouldn't include weekends or holidays - we pro-choice people have to do what we can to make it easier for women to exercise that choice. That's why the National Network of Abortion Funds is holding its fourth annual Abortion Access Bowl-a-Thon, raising money … [Read more...]
