Skype It to Me

So, I've decided to sign up for Skype after getting several invitations to use it for speaking gigs. (Apparently, sometime when I wasn't paying attention, this became a thing that everyone has.) I don't really know anything about how this works, but my profile name is daylightatheism. If you'd like to add me as a friend or whatever, feel free to do that. I suppose, now that I have the webcam and the microphone, that I could use it for Google+ Hangouts as well. Anyone interested in something … [Read more...]

The Fiery Fountain

My first book hasn't been out for long, but I'm thinking it's almost time to start writing the next one. I came back from my trip to the U.K. with a head full of ideas, and I want to start getting them down on the page. My next book is going to be a novel, not nonfiction. I may write another book about atheism in the future, but at the moment, I don't have any topic ideas that haven't already been covered better by other authors. But I do have some ideas for works of fiction, lots of them, in … [Read more...]

Photo Sunday: Edinburgh

On the second half of my U.K. trip, we spent a few days in the lovely city of Edinburgh, the capitol of Scotland. My wife Elizabeth has written a thorough review of the best part of our stay: the pubs! Here are some other highlights:On our first day, we went out for a walk in what turned out to be one of the biggest rainstorms the city had seen in a while. It rained so hard my umbrella soaked through, and we got lost wandering around the downtown and ended up taking shelter in a … [Read more...]

Photo Sunday: London

I'm home again after my swing through the U.K., and I've finally had time to go through all the pictures I took. Here are a few of the best from our first few days in London:We got a taste of real English weather on our first day there, but the second day favored us with some sunshine. We walked through Whitehall Gardens in the center of the city near the Thames......and then went for a ride on the London Eye.Looking north along the Thames as we … [Read more...]

Things I’m Thankful For

As long-time readers know, except on rare occasions, I don't write about my personal life on this blog. This isn't because I'm trying to be mysterious; I just don't think it's especially interesting! But, occasionally, my life reaches a milestone significant enough that I have to be egotistical and write about it. I think this is one of those times, because next week is my 30th birthday. (My wife enjoyed reminding me of this just a little too much. She'd best laugh while she can; it'll be her … [Read more...]

Open Thread: New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year, everyone! As I may have mentioned in the past, I like the tradition of making New Year's resolutions: it's an entirely secular holiday whose point is self-improvement, which is something any atheist ought to be able to get behind. In that spirit, this post is dedicated to New Year's resolutions: whether you kept the ones from last year, and what you resolve to do in the year ahead. I'll go first: As I mentioned last year, I resolved to keep a food journal in 2011. This one went … [Read more...]

Find Me in Freethought Today

Request for Technical Help

So, I feel a bit embarrassed about this, since I'm a computer guy in my day job and all. But my home machine is experiencing a very annoying problem that's got me stumped, and I was hoping that the Internet, being the source of all human knowledge, can offer me some advice. I know I have some technically inclined readers who might be able to make suggestions.I have a Dell Studio 540 desktop running Windows 7, and recently, it's started randomly freezing. I don't mean a blue screen of death. … [Read more...]

Find Me on Google Plus

Well, a kindly person (thanks, Jayson!) sent me an invite to Google Plus, so I've signed up. I don't really know what this is going to be useful for just yet, but if you're also there and want to send me a friend request (or whatever the heck it's called), go right ahead. … [Read more...]

Photo Sunday: The Beard Experiment

Regular readers may remember that last month, I let myself get talked into growing a beard as the result of a fundraising contest for Camp Quest. Well, I'm not about to suffer through an entire scorching summer with this extra insulation - but I've let it grow freely for a month now, and I think that's more than enough time to judge the finished product. If you think you can handle the sheer masculine power, follow me below the fold... … [Read more...]
