Extreme Makeover: the "Gloria" edition

Well, it’s not that extreme…but it’s definitely different.

Here’s something that may be coming your way next Advent: the new “Gloria,” composed by Jeff Ostrowski, to accommodate the new translation of the Roman Missal.  H/T The Anchoress.

  1. Wow, I … like it.

  2. Wow, I … like it. A lot in fact.

Sure, it’s different, but there is a cadence to it that is peaceful and glorifying simultaneously.

  3. I like it to listen to very much, but to me, it doesn’t seem very congregationally singable.

  4. I think if we can sing “On eagle’s wings” we can sing this.

  5. Yeah, but we really can’t sing “On Eagle’s Wings”. I mean, have you ever heard it sung well by a congregation?

I like the Gloria. I think it’s beautiful. No, I don’t think it will be sung well by a congregation. Is it expected that the congregation will join in, or listen and pray reflectively while the cantor chants? That’s what a lot (most?) of the people do today, even with the current versions of the Gloria, and many of the other parts of the Mass.

I’m looking forward to the new translation. My only concern: how many priests will take it upon themselves to improvise the prayers, rather than pray them faithfully? Improvisation seems to be the norm today.

  6. Well, maybe not next Advent, Deacon Greg. The Gloria is omitted during the Advent season (with the exception of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, when the Gloria is called for). Just a minor point from a liturgical terrorist! LOL

  7. Very very nice. Soothing. Uplifting. Beautiful. But I have throw in my towel (stole?) along with those who think its not written for a congrgegation of mixed ability.

  8. Fr. Gene Vavrick says:

    A nice post.

There are many, many, new compositions of the newly translated GLORIA and other MASS PARTS coming out from different publishers. Check out WLP, OCP, and the GIA websites.

A small point: Catholics don’t sing the GLORIA during Advent.

So, the pastoral plan is: teach our congregations the new settings of the GLORIA now, so that they will be ready to sing them with “Full Voices” at Christmastime next year!

  9. Stunningly beautiful chant!!! The people simply need to be taught how to chant. We’ll get there with solid effort. Keep it coming!!!
