How tall is Mary?

A new book claims to have that answer, and some other details, about the apparition in Medjugorje.

The Virgin Mary is a blue eyed teenage girl that appears taller than she is because she stands on a cloud.

That is according to a new book that has carried out exclusive interviews with the the visionaries of Medjugorje, who first saw her 30 years ago this year when they were schoolchildren.

On June 24, 1981, six children in the town of Medjugorje, in then Yugoslavia, began to experience phenomena which they alleged to be apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The apparition they saw had a message of peace for the world, as well as a call to conversion, prayer and fasting.

The message has gained a strong following among Catholics worldwide and Međugorje has become one of the most popular pilgrimage sites attracting over 30 million pilgrims since the apparitions began in 1981.

On June 4, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI blessed a statue of Our Lady of Međugorje in Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican City.

In the new book “Medjugorje – 30 years of a phenomenon” authors Marijan Sivric and Ivo Scepanovic have spoken to the schoolchildren – now adults – who said they are surprised that people so often ask “what does she look like”.

Visionary Vicka Ivanković said: “She is only 165 centimetres tall [about 5' 5"] , and probably weighs about 60 kilos [about 130 lbs].”

She added the Lady is dressed in a grey gown and a white veil covering her black hair, adding: “She has a crown of golden stars, blue eyes, rosy cheeks, and she floats on a silver cloud. She never stands on the ground.”

  1. Paula Gonzales Rohrbacher says:

It is absolutely ridiculous to think that the real Mary was blue eyed, given where she was born. I think in her apparitions, Mary appears to the visionaries as they would picture her. That’s my theory, anyway! I’m not convinced that the “apparitions” in Medjugore (or Wisconsin) are true…

  2. Interesting, but I suspect both Jesus and Mary will look “race/ethnic appropriate” to all of us.

For example, does it seem likely that Aboragines, Africians, and Chinese will “see” Mary as a “Western Women?” I certainly don’t know, but suspect she is our mother in every culture and every skin color, same as Jesus.

It’s only a guess, but I think if when I finally see Mary, she has slanted eyes and only speaks Japanese, I would feel like I wasn’t getting all of Mary. Consequently, that’s why I think she and Jesus are probably “accomadating” in apperance.

  3. Deacon Norb says:

Two diverse yet very important ideas converge here: Paula has taken one side and Klaire the other:

–The historic Lady Miryam of Nazareth was a Palestinian Jew. She likely would have been short (under 5’4″); dark hair; dark almond eyes; olive complexion; certainly under 120 in weight. She would have been a new mother at the age of 15. Olivia Hussey’s portrayal her in “Jesus of Nazareth” was “right-on” accurate.

–The Blessed Virgin Mary of all time and eternity seems to be (as Klaire suggested) “race/ethnic appropriate to all of us.” That’s why she looks “metzitso” as Our Lady of Guadalupe; “black” as Our Lady of Africa (in that side chapel at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception) and “Native American/First Nation” as I have seen her in a creche on the Navajo Reservation at St. Michael Church in Window Rock, Arizona.

I do, however, get rather annoyed at all these blue-eyed, blond haired, tall portrayals of her but I do also think Lady Mary’s patience with all of that is far cosmic than mine.

  4. Klaire, I think you are right. How else would one explain that Bernadette saw Mary as very petite, almost like a child; the Guadaloupe image is like a Native American; and St. Catherine Laboure saw her as she is on the Miraculous Medal.

  5. Thanks, I will be able to sleep tonite. There have been many times when I have stayed awake all night thinking about how tall the Mother of my Lord might have been. Now I know. Sorry for the sarcasm but it seems kind of silly to me.

  6. 60 kilos (132 lbs) at 5′ 5″. Perhaps about right, but why are we Americans the only ones not using the Metric system? Bosnians and English people use the Metric system; yet we use the English system. Would a long-overdue switch be cataclysmic here, folks?? Where are all those property taxes going? What’s with our public school system? Beam me up, Scottie!!

  7. And according to the picture she uses entirely too much under-eye liner and brow pencil.

I don’t buy this stuff. This so-called apparition has focused more on the ridiculous than the truly holy.
