Muslims act as human shields for Christians

As Copts mark their Christmas, under threats of attack and fear of further bloodshed, The Anchoress points to this great story of solidarity in Egypt:

Egypt’s majority Muslim population stuck to its word Thursday night. What had a been a promise of solidarity to the weary Coptic community, was honoured, when thousands of Muslims showed up at Coptic Christmas eve mass services in churches around the country and at candle light vigils held outside.

From the well-known to the unknown, Muslims had offered their bodies as “human shields” for last night’s mass, making a pledge to collectively fight the threat of Islamic militants and towards an Egypt free from sectarian strife.

“We either live together, or we die together,” was the sloganeering genius of Mohamed El-Sawy, a Muslim arts tycoon whose cultural centre distributed flyers at churches in Cairo Thursday night, and who has been credited with first floating the “human shield” idea.

Among those shields were movie stars Adel Imam and Yousra, popular preacher Amr Khaled, the two sons of President Hosni Mubarak, and thousands of citizens who have said they consider the attack one on Egypt as a whole.

“This is not about us and them,” said Dalia Mustafa, a student who attended mass at Virgin Mary Church on Maraashly. “We are one. This was an attack on Egypt as a whole, and I am standing with the Copts because the only way things will change in this country is if we come together.”

In the days following the brutal attack on Saints Church in Alexandria, which left 21 dead on New Year’ eve, solidarity between Muslims and Copts has seen an unprecedented peak. Millions of Egyptians changed their Facebook profile pictures to the image of a cross within a crescent – the symbol of an “Egypt for All”, and around the city, banners went up calling for unity, and depicting mosques and churches, crosses and crescents, together as one.

  1. This is beautiful–a great symbol of the joint pursuit of peace.

Who said that all Muslims are evil? Many are as anxious for peace as are the Christians who live among them. Those that are using themselves as shields are proof that they care about others and most certainly don’t approve of the extreme their fellow Muslims go to to show their distain for non-Muslims.

  3. What a beautiful demonstration of compassion and national unity! God bless every one of the Muslims who agreed to participate. My only concern is that the militants will regard them as heretics and blasphemers and not give one hoot about killing them as well. Consider the assassination of the governor in Pakistan. My God protect them all, Muslims and Copts, and bring peace to Egypt and the entire Middle East.

  4. How ironic the world has become. Majority of peace loving people irrespective of race, religion want and can live together in harmony but the problem are created and sustained by the agents of evils, the powerful and wealthy leaders of nations who want to suppress and control the weak and poor nations. EGO & GREED are the ingredients that fuels the hatred among innocent human beings throughout.

This story of Egyptian Muslims being human shields for Christians is adorable and a very touching story because it shows there are still many good people all around the world who are not consumed by hate and bigotry but yearn for peace, joy, love and harmony. The Egyptian Muslims’ demonstration and excercise of humanity while displaying tolerance, for diverse views , religious beliefs, respect for lives of their fellow citizens is heart warming and worthy of salutation.
Some other countries can take some valuable lessons from this.
If we remember the Bible, Muslims came from the same stock, being sons of Abraham so we can live in universal peace and enjoy interactive success and relationship, practicing equality, justuce and fairplay. In actuality, we are brothers and sisters as , members of the human race despite our beliefs, thus we are responsible for each other.
Again thank you for showing such loyalty and national solidarity to their own citizens.Bravo Egypt for showing National Solidarity it is action not just lip service.Unconditional love is a powerful mechanism for world peace.

IT IS THAT THE MEDIA GIVES A WRONG IMPRESSION OF ISLAM. IT ONLY TALKS ABOUT THE WARS .

I am not a muslim but to me the muslim are LOVABLE PEOPLE. AND ISLAM PREACHES LOVE.

IN WORDS OF MAHATMA GHANDI A GOOD MUSLIM IS A GOOD CHRISTAIN AND A GOOD CHRISTAIN IS A GOOD HINHU and a GOOD HINDU IS A GOOD MUSLIM
