California passes bill requiring schools to teach gay history

It happened late Tuesday:

A bill to require California public schools to teach the historical accomplishments of gay men and lesbians passed the state Legislature on Tuesday in what supporters call a first for the nation.

Governor Jerry Brown, a Democrat, has not said publicly whether he supports the bill, which he has 12 days to sign or veto once it reaches his desk later this month. If he takes no action, the measure would become law automatically.

The bill gained final passage from the state Assembly on a vote of 49-25, without a single Republican supporting it. The measure cleared the state Senate in April.

California already requires public schools to teach the contributions made to society by women and by racial and ethnic groups that were historically discriminated against, such as blacks, Latinos and Native Americans.

Supporters of the latest bill said it would simply include gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals in that existing requirement, making it part of the curriculum in history and other social studies classes.

  4. Does anyone know of a situation where someone who was gay who accomplished something significant in history has been systematically excluded from history books? I certainly am not aware of any such thing, which, of course, may be refelctive of the fact that it was excluded. If there isn’t any example of that, this seems like nothing more than window-dressing, or a precursor to requiring positive comments about homosexuality and/or prohibiting negative comments.

    In a word, no.

    The question is whether they accomplished something significant becuase they were gay or because they were smart, bold, enterprising? Seems the sexuality part has nothing to do with it.

  6. It has never been about tolerance. It has always been about validation and then, indoctrination. The validation is well under way. When the indoctrination has taken deep root, then they will turn on the Church with a vengeance.

  7. Gerard Nadal: I think they have started already to turn on the Church very ferociously already. But I agree we have not seen the worse yet.

  8. I teach a Reading course and American Literature. Some of the authors my students study are homosexuals. The fact that they are homosexuals makes no difference in the quality of their writing or the themes they present. A few years ago some of my students heard that William Shakespeare was gay (their word, not mine). For the whole unit I couldn’t get them past the subject of Shakespeare’s sexuality (they were high school Sophomores so there you go). This whole push to highlight the historical contributions of homosexuals will only muddle the historical significance of their contributions. Why not offer a course on the historical significance of celibate men in the history of California? The Franciscan Friars who built the missions in California did not contribute to California’s history because they were celibate and it would it would be a detriment to history to simply focus on that one small part of their lives.

  9. I’m all in favor of gay rights, including marriage. Not a big fan of politicians micromanaging curriculum in any form though. If they’re going to mandate anything, they ought to pass a law requiring the teaching of ANY history. Americans in general are shockingly ignorant of the most basic outlines of our history, let alone the nuances of contributions by one subculture or another.

  11. What a message for kids. Those whose behavior is gravely disordered is now going to be held up as some sort of hero. If they have done a great thing in America, it should not be relevent that they are singled out by sexual choice to make some kind of point. Few would know if the founders of our country were homosexual or hetrosexual and it should not be an issue.

  12. History should be about those that made a difference and why it was important. To first try to find homosexuals and then try to find anything they did of value seems like the wrong direction for education. This is especially true when the kids coming out do not even know the basic facts about the constitution and the history of our great country devoid of the lies given to us by the PC crowd. Now we are going to do history by sexual behavior choice…What next, the great history of those who had loving incestual relationships or the great polygomist in history.

  13. Typical. Let’s take more time away from the scant hours schools have to teach math, science and writing skills.
