The following e-mail arrived last night, from Deacon Dennis Kelly of Seattle:
Greetings from Central America.
Three deacons from the Seattle Archdiocese helped celebrate Mass with the Tzutuhill Mayan people in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, this past Sunday.
All are part of the Maryknoll Martyrs Pilgrimage for clergy (14 priests and four deacons) to El Salvador and Guatemala.
Our group visited Santiago Atitlan to see where Fr. Stan Rother was martyred in 1981. In fact, we spent the night in the rectory a few dozen feet from the library where a military death squad executed Fr. Rother.
While we were in the Lake Atitlan area, we bumped into Fr. Tom McMichael (from Laconner) who is on a mission with parishioners to Opal House, a Catholic lay charity run by former St. Jude parishioners Dr. Will and Diane Bogel in in Agua Escondida, Guatemala.
We asked Fr. Tom to join us at 10am Mass with Bishop Gonzalo de Villa y Vasquez, S.J. presiding.
The stoles were hand-made by the Tzutuhill community.
Here’s a picture of the four clergy from the Seattle Archdiocese just before Mass.
