The lesson: capuchins are very touchy

Good to know for all those who have dealings with Cardinal O’Malley or Archbishop Chaput. Below a video that shows an experiment involving a pair of capuchin monkeys.  One is rewarded for a task with a cucumber; the other gets a grape. Watch what happens when the Cucumber Capuchin realizes what’s going on.

The distressing disguise of the poor: “I’m not a bum. I’m a human being”

Meet Ronald Davis, a homeless man from Chicago whose story has suddenly become a social media sensation: As one of Chicago’s more than 105,000 estimated homeless citizens, Ronald Davis’ story of struggling to survive on the streets may not be unique — but the reaction to his plea for work and dignity certainly is. As it happened: the Boston bombing

Chilling video, from the Boston Globe website. God have mercy.

Want to attend a papal audience?

If so, just take a couple minutes and watch this video from the good folks at CNS. It captures the atmosphere and spirit of these events.  (This one is from last week.) When I attended one about 10 years ago, a young Jewish woman from Germany was next to me and exclaimed, with wonder and [...]

Hilarious “Ode to Sleep Deprived Parents” set to “Carmina Burana”

You don’t need to know a note of music to love this. Details:  We dare you not to giggle when you hear “Ode to Sleep Deprived Parents and Terrorizing Toddlers,” performed with somber gravitas by more than 200 members of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and set to the music of “O Fortuna,” the intense opening [...]

After Ezra: a must-read story about how a Hindu and Baptist joined the Church at Easter

Honestly, my headline doesn’t do justice to this piece.  Just drop everything and take the time to read this. I can’t remember the last time a secular publication (in this case, the Des Moines Register) offered such a beautiful and inspiring story of Catholicism, told with a tone that is not only respectful, but actually [...]

VIDEO: Pope Francis, deacon—UPDATED

From Rome Reports, the Holy Father is shown in this video washing the feet of 12 jailed teenagers —including two Muslims and two girls—and wearing the stole of a deacon. UPDATE: A couple readers have noted that it appears Pope Francis is actually wearing his priest’s stole, turned to one side. They suggest he did [...]

Praying the Stations of the “L”: one man’s unique journey through Chicago

The Chicago Tribune follows one young man’s unusual pilgrimage: There’s nothing extraordinary about Aidan Gillespie’s daily commute on the No. 50 bus down Damen Avenue. Perhaps that’s why the Roman Catholic schoolteacher chose the train Tuesday for a more spiritual journey. Setting out before dawn, Gillespie, 25, rode every line of Chicago’s “L” from end [...]

Kids in kilts: this is spectacular

Check out this grin-inducing drum line performance from a talent show two years ago at Lake Howell High School in Orlando. These guys call themselves the Hot Scots. Enjoy.
