Why I’m Not Watching the Political Conventions

Why I’m Not Watching the Political Conventions July 21, 2016

Today is the final day of the Republican National Convention, and the Democratic Convention starts next Monday. I’ve paid enough attention this week to get the gist (I won’t call them high points) of the proceedings, but I’ve made a conscious choice not to watch either convention.

It’s not about party affiliation. I’m turning off both conventions for the same five reasons:

Rhetoric that sounds like it comes from abusive parents has no place in my life. I was fortunate to have a steady and stable upbringing, but that wasn’t the case for a host of people I’ve worked with. The threatening language we’re hearing in these campaigns is simply another version of “We ought to kick you out of this house” and “You’ll never amount to anything.” I wonder how many childhood nightmares are triggered for people as they listen to the belligerence in political speeches.
