Friday Fear-mongering

Friday Fear-mongering October 3, 2014

The Earth of 2014 has many problems. shutterstock_205397671The mainstream media would like us to focus on certain of these:  Ebola in the U.S. ~ NFL problem-children ~ existential terrorist threats.  Others, we should ignore:  the ongoing climate change situation ~ FDA crackdowns on food producers ~ systemic racism.

Here’s a real news flash:  you can’t fix everything.

And another: you can fix some things.

First: take a breath. You can’t fix everything. Breathe into the silence in the center of you and let it grow. Let the silence fill the physical form of you. Let it fill your mind. Let it expand around you and quiet the voices clamoring for your attention.

Second: choose your priority. You can fix some things. What’s important today? Hard conversation with your partner about replacing the lawn with a garden? Making time to ride the bus instead of driving? Creating a budget that will allow you to tithe to the church/charity of your choice? Going to the City Council meeting?

Third: act. Stop the wool-gathering and the intertubez-ing and move your physical body, use a pencil, call your neighbor, walk out the door.

shutterstock_120347647A tremendous amount of time and energy is wasted on trying to figure out what can be done. We fret and fret over what is the best use of our personal bandwidth and end up doing nothing. How do you know what to do? Listen to your tears, your anger and your pain, and lose the fear of making the wrong choice. Your choice will never be the only one that’s right.
