One of the most appalling moments of Monday’s Republican presidential debate was when the moderator asked a question about Rick Perry’s death penalty record. And when he mentioned how many executions had taken place under his watch, the audience cheered loudly. Balko’s response is perfect:
They enthusiastically applaud government executions. And they’re certain government is incompetent, except when it comes to bombing foreigners, torturing Muslims, and killing guilty people, in which cases government is always, 100 percent, how-dare-you-even-ask-questions correct.
And Perry’s claim that Texas has so many checks in place that it’s impossible for an innocent man to be executed is well beyond ridiculous.
