Jon Stewart on John King and Newt

Jon Stewart had a hilarious take on the now-famous John King and Newt Gingrich confrontation during last week’s debate over the open marriage allegations made by Newt’s ex-wife. Best line, about Gingrich’s absurd claims to be an outsider: “When Washington gets its prostate checked, it tickles you.”

It’s not often I laugh and projectile-vomit at the same time.

The way John King handled that question was abysmal. The question itself was bad enough – “Would you like to respond?” Really? – but then falling back on “We didn’t report it” is about the most idiotic way of defending yourself. I think Stewart and Rachel Maddow nailed the problem of the question: it should have addressed the hypocrisy of Gingrich asking for an open marriage while leading the charge against Clinton’s moral character. King treated it like a tabloid story that they wanted to get a soundbyte for, but a debate is not a news show and you’re not interviewing candidates on stage. If there is some relevant piece of information about a candidate’s past, then connect it to whatever issue will matter when it comes to the voting booth. Otherwise, just stick to the issues.

The race is Mitt-ness and Romney-ness versus Newt-ness and Gingrich-ness.

This is the logical degeneration of the modern Republican party. Kiss it goodbye.

John King might have responded with: “Who are you to lecture me about despicable?”

As a chronic philanderer, Newt quickly resorts to the cheating-husband-confronted-by-the-wife defence, “I can’t believe me you asked me that question. I’m offended.”

Maybe he should have interviewed Daffy Duck?
