Badass Quote of the Day

‎”Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of leaders and millions have been killed because of this obedience. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty, starvation, stupidity, war and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves and the grand thieves are running the country. That’s our problem.” — Howard Zinn.

About Ed Brayton

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

The counter to that is the old quote about a lack of “followership.” Everyone heading off in his own direction doesn’t get much done.

When you boil it down, the real problem is either human nature (for pessimists) or lack of education, especially in history and something approaching ethics (for the optimists.)

Holy shit, that one’s a keeper.

I do think Zinn is making it clear that blindly following is the problem he’s addressing.

Zinn has been awesome only forever, and is a huge reason why I’m returning to college for my history degree. It’s shocking what we don’t know about our own history in America.

John Silber? Is this nasty bigot still alive?

Re Chris from Europe @ #6

According to Wikipedia, Dr. Silber is still alive as we sit hear today.

    More power to Zinn.

Silber caused Massachusetts to elect a Republican governor. I claim to be a Democrat yet the first time I voted for Governor I voted Republican.

btw, Silber is a pretty good speaker. He has performed as a narrator for the group Boston Musica Viva, possibly more than once; I remember him narrating ‘Peter and the Wolf,’ pounding the podium as appropriate.
