Phyllis Schlafly may have told other women that their job was to stay at home barefoot and pregnant, but having a career as a wingnut heroine didn’t stop her from raising a bunch of little fundie spawn that mindlessly repeat her own stupidity and bigotry. Roger Schlafly is one of them, as you’ll see by reading this post at the Eagle Forum blog complaining that Protestants don’t completely control the country anymore:
After citing exit polls that showed that President Obama won the votes of those without strong (or any) religious beliefs, he says:
America was founded by WASPs — White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. They had nuclear families, attended church, and believed in the Protestant work ethic. Republicans are seen as believing in traditional American values.
Ah yes, those “traditional American values.” Like bigotry and discrimination against those who aren’t WASPs, and especially against LGBT people. At every single point in American history where progress has been made in making the country more free and equal — from ending slaver to women’s suffrage to civil rights for blacks to the gay rights movement — religious conservatives were the ones fighting like hell to preserve the status quo. Those “traditional values” were wrong then and they’re wrong now.
Democrats campaign largely by badmouthing traditional American values, and convincing various demographic groups that they are outside the Republican base, and hence better off voting Democrat. So non-whites, non-Christians, and non-marrieds vote Democrat out of group identifications. That is, they see it as being in their group interests to tear down traditional American culture.
Let me get out my wingnut to English dictionary: “WAAAAH! We used to control everything and now we don’t!” My heart bleeds.
