Andrew McCarthy, former federal prosecutor turned wingnut darling and first-class paranoiac, says that President Obama may release Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman as demanded by Algerian militants who took hundreds of hostages, including many Americans, at a gas plant in the Sahara desert.
An ugly and confusing terrorist attack at an Algerian gas facility is getting even more troubling as the Islamic radicals now demand the release of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and another prominent terrorist in exchange for the remaining American hostages…
Despite the adoration that Islamic radicals have for Abdel Rahman, the assumption of most is that the Obama administration will obviously reject the demands. McCarthy told WND he isn’t so sure. He said the odd response from the administration following Egyptian efforts to free Abdel Rahman leads him to believe there is some chance this could happen down the road.
“I think (the terrorists) may be rebuffed in the here and now, but we had very good reason to think that based on the reporting from the Egyptian press and from the strange silence of the Obama administration in the face of some of these demands for the blind sheikh that the State Department was already broaching the possibility in negotiations with Egypt on returning the blind sheikh on some cockamamie humanitarian grounds,” McCarthy said. “So I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility.
“I think if Obama had been defeated, the blind sheikh would have been returned to Egypt sometime in the 11 weeks between Election Day and Inauguration Day, and I’m still not convinced that it won’t happen. I doubt it will happen right now simply because you don’t want to appear to just surrender to these terrorists.”
This story was posted about 7 pm on Sunday night, many hours after it was reported that the hostage siege was over and that Algerian government forces had retaken the complex. So I don’t know who McCarthy and the Worldnutdaily thinks is going to be traded. More importantly, this is simply daft. What possible good could the release of Rahman do Obama? it would cause a massive firestorm of controversy and hand his political enemies all the ammunition they could ever need to stop his agenda dead in its tracks.
Of course, McCarthy doesn’t need to make sense here. His target audience isn’t made up of people who think rationally or care about evidence. That’s why he can get away with throwing out this ridiculous hypothetical scenario about Obama releasing Rahman if he had lost the election; he knows his audience will nod and say, “Ah, of course he would.” No evidence is needed and when this prediction turns out to be false, neither will any retractions or explanations.
You know who did negotiate with terrorists and actually help arm them in a trade for the release of American hostages? St. Ronnie Reagan (Peace Be Upon Him). He sold more than 2500 TOW anti-tank missiles and 18 Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to Iran, which only a few years earlier had taken Americans hostage in our embassy there, in order to get hostages held in Lebanon by Hezbollah released. But Obama’s hypothetical and non-existent dealings with terrorists must be shouted from the rooftops, while Reagan’s actual crimes are rarely mentioned because that would undermine the right’s hagiography.
