I already announced this on Facebook, but I should do it here as well. I am joining the Foundation Beyond Belief as the new Media Relations Coordinator, along with several others who will be working to make the organization even better than it already is (and it’s already pretty damn great).
It isn’t a job, really; I’ll be devoting a few hours a week to it and earning a small stipend. It’s an opportunity for me to put my skills and experience to work on behalf of an organization I really support and to work with some incredible people in the process. FBB’s founder, Dale McGowan, is someone who really should get more attention as a leader in the atheist/humanist/skeptic community. He represents that community extraordinarily well and has worked tirelessly to put humanist principles into action in the U.S. and around the world.
The Foundation Beyond Belief’s mission statement is this:
To demonstrate humanism at its best by supporting efforts to improve this world and this life, and to challenge humanists to embody the highest principles of humanism, including mutual care and responsibility.
I believe that atheists and humanists should be leading that fight because we know that our problems are human ones and the solutions must be as well. It’s not enough to advocate humanism as an abstract set of ideas. Principles don’t mean much until they’re put into action, until they are making a real difference in people’s lives. And that’s why I’m so excited to be involved with the Foundation Beyond Belief.
