The Mormon Church has apparently given its approval to a proposed change in Boy Scouts rules that would allow gay teens to join and the wingnuts are losing their mind over it. Unsurprisingly, Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality had one of the more amusing responses:
The AFTAH president says there have been cases over the years of boys being molested by homosexual predators in the Boy Scouts.
“Look, this is a church which is outside of Christendom,” he explains. “Mormons can change their core beliefs and call it a divine transformation. They did it with polygamy; they did it with racism – and now I’m afraid, I’m very afraid, that they’re going to do it with homosexuality.”
It’s a good thing no churches inside of Christendom have ever done that. Like the Southern Baptist Convention, which was formed to defend slavery. I mean, they haven’t changed their “core beliefs” or anything and claimed divine sanction for it. Oh wait, they did. And all those churches that preached and fought against rescinding laws against interracial marriage. And the Catholic Church didn’t used to torture Jews and others to force them to convert to Christianity. Oh wait, they did. “Christendom” has changed massively over the centuries, despite the pretenses of ignorant assholes like LaBarbera.
