DesJarlais Gets Slap on Wrist

Remember Rep. Scott DesJarlais, the “family values” Republican legislator from Tennessee who won reelection despite having had multiple affairs with his patients and being caught on tape trying to get one of his mistresses to have an abortion? He’s now received a very light slap on the wrist for it all:

Rep. Scott DesJarlais, a licensed physician, was reprimanded and fined by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners for having sex with patients before he was elected to Congress, according to documents released Thursday.

The Republican won re-election last year despite revelations he had affairs with patients and once urged one of them to seek an abortion.

He was fined $500 for two counts of unprofessional conduct, and is responsible for up to $1,000 in costs for the panel’s investigation. He did not the contest the findings

The ruling comes in response to two complaints filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which called the penalties “piteous.”

“This decision demonstrates that Tennessee’s ban on sexual exploitation of patients is essentially meaningless,” Melanie Sloan, the group’s executive director, said in a statement. “Doctors in the Volunteer State can freely prey on patients with little fear of repercussions.”

That’ll teach him.

    Hypocrisy is one of the three main sacraments of the fundies.

    They are so predictable.

    This is one of many places where xianity fails. They are no better than anyone else. The fundie perversion is factually, statistically worse than most.

    They even acknowledge it on occasion. The old bumper sticker. “Xians aren’t better just saved.” Yeah, sure, if it is just a get out of jail free card.

    To be fair, it is possible to be a good person and a xian. It’s just harder though.

    @1: How do you know that DesJarlais is a “fundie?”

  • Draken

    @dan4: ’cause he’s a Republican.

    Scotty Desgenerate is prolly not a fundie. He belongs to an episcopal church with a lady pastor. So, prolly not a fundie, just another reptiliscum hypocrite.

    While he may have gotten a slap on the wrist from the courts he will have a real problem if more women start coming out of the woodwork to accuse him, now that he’s admitted guilt.

  • dan4

    His church’s pastor is female? LOL, then he is DEFINITELY not a “fundie.”

    “Doctors in the Volunteer State can freely prey on patients with little fear of repercussions.”

    Especially if they’re powerful “family values” republicans. I wonder what the average punishment for doctors who have sex with their patients and have not been elected to Congress is.

    IOKIYAR.

    John Ensign, Larry Craig, David “Diaper Man” Vitter, Newt Gingrich, suffered no consequences (aside from a brief period of embarrassment). Mark Sanford was recently elected to congress after his “hike”.

    Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards, Anthony Weiner were forced from office.

    What is the difference between these two lists?

    More importantly, what is going on with the Tennessee board of physicians? They need to immediately take his license away.

    @d.c.wilson and @karmacat

    Actually, the medical boards are notorious for failing to reign in bad physicians. The only physicians that get their licenses pulled away are for political (internal medical politics), they royally messed up either many, many times or they messed up so badly that even a non-doctor can figure out it is bad.

    I have a relative that was on a review board, and she was disgusted by the slaps on the wrists that many physicians are getting (one involved a death of an elderly person that probably could have been saved easily enough). You need to understand that most cases that go to court for malpractice are against doctors that have a long list of problems.

    Medical boards are another example of how self-regulation does not work.

    @Dan4

    Desjarlais probably isn’t a fundie, but it’s reasonable to assume that many people who voted for him are. Those voters are the hypocritical fundies I thought raven was talking about.

  • sezme

    So, up to $1,500 for multiple occurrences of the horizontal mambo. That’s not a fine, that’s just standard market rates.

    Re Dan4 @ #1

    Possibly raven was referring to the fundie voters who voted for Desjarlais despite his transgressions. They are the hypocrites who preach family values but vote for a slimeball like Desjarais who practices them not at all.

    This.

    I can’t begin to count the times supposedly devout right-wing asshats will vote for, give money to, and patronize the most two-faced individuals simply because they espouse the political opinions they agree with. Like family values types who supported Newt Gingrich or listen to Rush Limbaugh, just to name a couple.

    TGAP Dad,

    One correction: edwards wasn’t forced from office. His troubles came later.

    All you have to do to get elected to office in some parts of this country is boast about how much you love Jesus, guns and tax cuts and hate gay marriage and abortion. No need to have any knowledge of policy.
