Vitigliano: We’ll Be Dodging Fire and Brimstone Soon

Ed Vitigliano of the American Family Bigotry Association writes that America has become more accepting of homosexuality because we straight people have our own “perverse sexual appetites” (ain’t that the truth) and warns that we’ll all be dodging fire and brimstone soon.

The homosexual movement has had such great success because Americans have become arrogantly self-indulgent and idolatrous. Straight America has embraced homosexuality because straight Americans first embraced the sexual revolution for the satisfaction of their own perverse sexual appetites.

Judgment came to Sodom because violent homosexuality was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. As a prevalent sin, however, it was the manifestation of an underlying wickedness that permeated the entire culture – a wickedness that was not limited to the homosexual.

Thus homosexuality often becomes the barometer of a culture rotting out from the inside. If the problem were only homosexuality, then the simple act of pushing it back into the closet (if that were possible) would be enough to forestall judgment.

But what Ezekiel 16 teaches us is this: By the time a culture accepts idolatry, abortion and homosexuality, it is already ripe for the devastation wrought by God’s wrath.

Whether they live in a decidedly pagan culture or one, like America, that is an admixture, Christians are called to be salt and light.

Standing against the unrighteousness permeating our society might not be the easy thing to do, but it’s a whole lot easier than running from the fire and brimstone that inevitably follow.

Let me pull out the wingnut-to-English dictionary and translate that for you: “You’re so gay! And if you don’t stop, my invisible friend is going to beat you all up!” How convincing.

    “Standing against the unrighteousness…”

… will be a whole bunch of self-righteousness.

Ole Yahweh seems to be confining his bashing activities to Oklahoma these days. This is the state of James Inhofe and SallyKern.

What this country REALLY needs is to stand up for lefteousness for a change.

This was supposed to happen in 2004, when San Francisco started issuing marriage certificates to gay couples. Other than a deployment to Iraq, I’ve been living in the area longer than that. Now I’m actually working in the City itself.

    Zip.

    Zilch.

    Zero.

I want my upside down fireworks display!

It would be a very nice change.

There they go again, with the unintentionally? gay imagery.

You know, the business with Sodom wasn’t about men wanting to screw men. It was about men wanting to screw angels. So, unless you declare that angels are really men — I’m afraid we have a category problem. Couldn’t they have been female angels? I’ve seen female angels on TV — I’m quite sure of it.

And this is a question that has bugged me like forever. OK, I know Sodom and I know what sodomy is.

But what the heck is Gomorrah-y? What did they do to deserve what they got? Is it fun? I’ll bet it’s really fun.

  • Pierce R. Butler

How do you measure rot with a barometer?

  • raven

You know, the business with Sodom wasn’t about men wanting to screw men. It was about men wanting to screw angels.

    No.

It was about being a Tea Party fundie moron.

    Ezekiel 16 NIV:

    49 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned;

they did not help the poor and needy.

50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

These guys have an alleged magic book that they never bother to even read.

By the time a culture accepts idolatry, abortion and homosexuality…

But why does it take all three to happen before the sky pixie offs a few thousand or million people? I would think idolatry alone – which has been allowed in this country since the Bill of Rights was adopted (just ask the Baptists about the Roman Catholics, aka “papist idol worshippers”) – would be enough to bring down his wrath.

Pascal’s Wager about current life rather than once-you’re-dead? The quote fails for many of the same reasons. Also, aside from people who life next to active volcanoes (geology, how’s that work), this happens ever?

  • matty1

@9 Gommorahy is the unspeakable sin, there is no record of exactly what was involved but rumour is it was responsible for the eruption of Krakatoa, the Japanese tsunami and following nuclear meltdown and Steven Seagal’s musical career.

  • Synfandel

I learn so much every day from this blog.

I learned today that there is a “homosexual movement”, where I thought there was just a civil rights movement that included the protection of the civil rights of LGBT persons.

I learned that there is a thing called “violent homosexuality”, though I’m not sure what it means unless it’s the sort of power exchange kink that exists equally among heterosexuals.

And I learned that “…Christians are called to be salt and light.” It sounds scary. I’m glad I’m not a Christian.

  • Taz

Thus homosexuality often becomes the barometer of a culture rotting out from the inside.

He has a ton of evidence to support that claim, but he can’t get to it right now because all the evidence for creationism is piled on top.

  • matty1

@15 No, no the homosexual movement is when you swing your hips like that. The heterosexual movement is more of a straight up and down.

  • scienceavenger

The homosexual movement has had such great success because Americans have become arrogantly self-indulgent…

Whereas it isn’t the least bit self-indulgent to fantasize that the omnipotent supreme creator of the universe shares your social views.

  • D. C. Sessions

So in other words, sexual non-intolerance is just the symptom. The disease (as the Bible cites specifically WRT Sodom) is callous neglect of the poor, the refusal to care for widows and orphans, the denial of justice (the word for “justice” in Hebrew is the same as for “charity,” by the way.)

So the root cause is the conservatives and the social liberals are just the symptom.

Funny how they never mention that part.

  • D. C. Sessions

the fire and brimstone that inevitably follow.

About that “inevitably” thing — how long does it take? I mean, the whole “Europe under Hapsburg rule” went on, complete with most of the people not being married at all and the upper classes screwing with anything that suited their fancies (whatever the fancy-ee thought of the idea notwithstanding), rape widespread, murder in name of one or another church all over the place, the Church piling up more gold and other loot than the rest of the people in it combined …

OK, maybe that last might be on the fundies’ “good idea” list. Still … shouldn’t we have seen at least a wee bit of brimstone by now?

    Ezekiel 16…

Ezekiel was one of 3,000 Jewish high-class hostages in Babylon, a usual measure to prevent intifada of all sorts in occupied territories. He did not like his fate and blamed it on Israel’s false taste in allies. That’s why he depicts Jerusalem as a whore. It’s really a ton of metaphors upon metaphors, and these idiots don’t understand any of them.

    @Raven, #11, Sodom

Ezekiel 16:49 “pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.” Not a word on homosexuality.

The idea of a city (in 600 BCE) with an exclusively homosexual citizenry is clearly a fundie sexual fantasy. Likewise is the part (Ezekiel 16:26) about the Egyptians being”great in the flesh”… Yeah, size matters.

It seems to go unnoticed that Ezekiel wrongly predicts the return of Sodom and Samaria to their former glory, as another sign of his Lord’s wrath and wish to humiliate Jerusalem (16:55).

Further to 19, I had this from a minister friend who understands Biblical Hebrew (which isn’t that much like Modern Hebrew): the Sodom story has the mob screaming `Bring them out so that we may know them’. Since we all know that `know’ in the Biblical sense means `to have sex with’, the meaning is obvious. Except: there are several words for `know’ in Hebrew, and the one used in the Sodom story has no sexual connotations at all. My friend did an analysis of every use of `know’ in the Hebrew parts of the Bible, so he’s in a position to know.

So the actual meaning is more like `We think you have some undocumented immigrants in your house, Lot; bring them out so we can check their papers and then self-deport them…WITH ROCKS’.

I do wish the Xtian homophobes would, er, READ THEIR BIBLES.

Kevin & Matty – exactly what the sin of Gommorah was is not known but there is evidence that it had something to do with Ireland as per the song, “How are Things in Glocc-Gommorah?”.

It’s kind of sad. They want us to be impressed with their god, but all I see is a petty control freak who gets all enraged about which body parts we chose to rub together. Pathetic.
