Another Local Pol Sends Racist Emails

And yet another local elected official has been caught sending racist emails and then doing the “what, me racist?” thing. This time it’s a school board member in Virginia who has his fellow board members calling on him to resign after forwarding these emails:

This all goes back to the Isle of Wight school board member Herb Degroft and an e-mail he sent containing naked women and a reference to First Lady Michelle Obama.

He forwarded two emails from his county email account. One had a picture with bare-breasted, African female warriors with the caption “Michelle Obama’s high school reunion.” Another e-mail claimed Mrs. Obama was paid $50 to model in National Geographic.

But he’s not resigning and, of course, he’s not racist.

In retrospect, Degroft admits he made a mistake. He says the e-mails were meant to be political, not racist.

I bet he has a lot of black friends. I bet he even lets them use his bathroom.

Hey, that’s right across the James River from where the blogs resident physics professor and math department chairman hangs his hat.

Even if we take his claim at face value, or at least presume utter honesty on his part, it makes no sense.

If you have a beef with the political bent of Barack Obama’s administration, how exactly does sending around photos of naked Africans with obviously racist/imperialist captions amount to a political statement about it?

The only answer I can think of is: it doesn’t.

In addition, whatever Degroft’s political views, as a matter of professional email etiquette (and possibly school board policy) he has no business sending around such emails on his county school board account.

Suffice to say, while Degroft may sincerely believe he is not racist, the emails clearly were and his attempt to re-brand them as “political” amount to a clumsy attempt to save face.

Since the only qualification needed to be on a school board is a birth certificate, why should we be surprised that some of the members are at the lower end of the gene pool?

Sex-ed is bad because it would encourage kids to have sex, but a school board guy posting pics of nearly naked women is perfectly okay. Gotta love that right-wing moral reasoning.

He says the e-mails were meant to be political, not racist.

Yeah, he’s not really racist, he’s just a politician pandering to racism to accomplish a political goal. Us libruls are too doctrinaire to understand the subtle but important difference.

I bet he has a lot of black friends. I bet he even lets them use his bathroom.

…then takes pictures of them to send in his next “political” email.

“He says the e-mails were meant to be political, not racist.”

Then, shouldn’t their topic have been politics, or a politician? Y’know, rather than racist crap?

Such is the level of intelligence in Richmond, VA. I’m surprised he had time to send two emails, what with his KKK duties and all.

  • Ellie

He should move to Western New York. The citizens of Buffalo just elected Carl (horse porn) Paladino to the Buffalo Board of Education. I guess they think pornographic and racist emails are a plus for someone in charge of the education of their children.

    Re Larry @ #7

Excuse me, this asshole is a member of the local school board in Isle of Wight Co., Va. Nothing to do with Richmond.

  • gshelley

Not that I believe him, but I’m struggling to think of any way that such photos could be any sort of political comment

  • AsqJames

He could always move to the Isle of Wight in the UK. Apparently it’s still 1955 there so he’d fit right in.

How can we be certain which Isle of Wight he came from? Degroft needs to produce his documentation to assure us he is eligible for office. The long form.

Upon reading the title, I thought this was going to be about the teabagger who said “Black people shouldn’t vote.”

Why am I not surprised that there are more like him?

thebookofdave “How can we be certain which Isle of Wight he came from? Degroft needs to produce his documentation to assure us he is eligible for office. The long form.”

And when he does that we also need his college transcripts. And when he does that…

  • thebookofdave

Seems needlessly complicated, MO, and potentially devasting to Degroft’s otherwise clean record. You see, Virginia requires school board officials to be free from the influence of Big Education. That means a strict ban on college (and public high school) involvement, with their children raised safely in homeschool. A transcript might be merely the result of casual experimentation with higher education, brought on by peer pressure. A passing phase of youthful indiscretion. There’s no need to tar a good man’s career with accusations of academic addiction. That’s just spiteful.

  • Nick Gotts

    #13,

Please explain. I tried googling “Isle of Wight 1955” – lots of nice pictures of the Isle of Wight in 1955, but nothing more relevant until this on the third page. Was that or something similar your source?

Degroft admits he made a mistake. He says the e-mails were meant to be sexistpolitical, not racist.

    FTFY

What’s that? Wait.. something can be political, sexist and racist at the same time?!? (mind blown)

  • Red-Green in Blue

    @Nick Gotts,

It’s just a bit of a running joke in the South of England (where I come from) that the Isle of Wight is a rather sleepy, boring and backward part of the country. It’s cut off from the rest of the country by the Solent and so relies on ferries for transport links, and is a fairly solid Tory-voting constituency, neither of which features help it to be a hip and trendy sort of place.

However it doesn’t deserve its admittedly amusing nickname, the “Pile of Shite” 😀 Apart from central Newport, which is a good example of clone-town England, it’s actually a very pleasant island, with fantastic beaches, good surfing and yachting, plenty of historical interest, and among the best weather in the British Isles. Some cool high-speed geological processes on its south coast too…

Degroft’s wife is a 45 whore who used to work in a Tijuana donkey show.

That’s intended as a political statement.

Is “intended as a political statement” the new “not intended as a factual statement”? Needs to be a hashtag (if it isn’t already).

So if we can’t make him quit for being a racist piece of shit, can we make him quit for being a misogynistic piece of shit?

Excuse me, but how is making fun of a politician’s wife a political statement?

SURE YOU RAISE AN INTERESTING QUESTION BUT THEN AGAIN YOUR WIFE HAS [NEGATIVE CHARACTERISTIC]! REFUTE THAT!
