Beck Interviews Beck

The more I see Glenn Beck, the more I begin to wonder if he isn’t some really elaborate, long-lasting, Andy Kaufman-like piece of performance art. Exhibit A: This bizarre interview with himself from a recent show, where he dons a bad fake mustache and accent and puts on a performance that would embarrass any teenager acting in a school play. Beck’s entire schtick looks more and more every day like a really slickly-produced cable access show starring people who think they’re funny.

Beck the dreck is about as funny as AIDS.

Back when he was still on Fox, Beck would come up in conversation between some friends and I every so often. Many of them wondered if he was pulling a Kaufman style prank or if he was just cynically saying what ever would make him the cash. My thoughts were that if either were the case it hardly mattered; there were loads of people in his audience that took him seriously enough that his act, if that is what it is, may as well be legitimate for all intents and purposes.

The skit ironically presumes that realists are wrong because they’re listening to the wrong authority figures. As opposed to what realists actually do, which is make conclusions based on evidence and the falsification of promoted notions popular with American conservatives, particularly conservative Christians (where I include Mormons).

Glenn Beck demonstrates once again he doesn’t even know what he doesn’t know, all while deploying weapons-grade psychological projection of his and his sheep’s defective way of thinking onto undeserving others. So I see no evidence he’s the architect of a scam where he understands what’s objectively true. Instead I see a nihilist who is increasingly rewarded the more he wipes his own shit all over himself, which is a type of amplifying feedback affect for him to come up with more shit and wipe more of it all over himself.

However, while this amplifying feedback affect may reward him with increasingly committed devotees, the number of devotees shrinks the more Beck descends into his own shit; e.g., his losing his Fox News gig. That’s exactly what happened with Sarah Palin and more recently, Michele Bachmann.

So the interesting question is how conservative Christianity will react to their demagogues’ implosions. Will these Christians divert their allegiance to new demagogues even worse than Palin, Bachmann, and Beck who then implode while these sheep move onto even crazier demagogues? Or will conservative Christians become more sane with a firmer grip on reality? In 2008 the answer seemed the former, now I think it could go either way.

by Brian Warner – in 619 Google+ circlesWhat is Glenn Beck’s net worth? Glenn Beck is an American conservative radio and television host, author who has a net worth of $105 million.

Beck’s net worth is estimated at $105 million and growing rapidly.

Whatever he is doing is working well.

His cable and internet network is growing at 45% a year. That is a lot. He is on the way to being ultra-rich.

Two pieces of evidence has me concluding Glenn Beck really is a delusional moron, besides the fact he behaves as delusional moron. One is the fact he couldn’t cut it at college. The second is I’ve seen some YouTube videos of him as a shock jock radio personality. In that job there was no potential subversive motivation, he was merely an entertainer. And a very idiotic one at that.

Since Beck appeals to my generation and older, I’m 53; his success and others like him has me concluding that the fragmentation of media has created a supply of media morons who cater to those who were educative failures. That this market niche can be successfully targeted while simultaneously appealing to another niche; those who are conservative Christians and therefore oppose disciplines whose experts falsify their beliefs. Where such opposition makes them anti-intellectuals even when they have relatively high IQs and demonstrate solid critical thinking skills in areas other than politics and religion.

  • Who Knows?

I agree with Michael Heath. I can’t imagine Glenn Beck being clever enough to think of any kind of performance art and he is just what he is. An ex-addict that has found he can make a lot of money by associating with the right people and saying the right things. Being an addict, he just doesn’t know where to stop. With his ego fueled by success he has gone too far and cannot find his way back to reality.

Hard to say if Beck believes his own gibberish. He might.

Some people have tenuous holds on reality and readily believe anything and everything. Including their own fantasies.

    1. Elron Hubbard is reported to have eventually believed his own fiction about Thetan ghosts, Xenu, and so on and died a man frightened of his own figments of imagination.

    2. The police once picked up a guy for murder. He confessed and went to prison. A few years later, some other jurisdiction picked up a serial killer. As part of a plea bargain to avoid execution, this guy listed his other murders. One of which was murder 1 above.

Why did the first guy confess to a murder he didn’t commit?

    3. We see this with various hysterias about satanists in preschools, implanted memories and what not.

Beck might well live in Alice’s wonderland, where reality is whatever he thinks it is and changes 6 times before breakfast.

He used to get millions from one scared, angry old man, now he gets $1 each from millions of them.

Beck himself is just an amusing example of abnormal psychology.

But without an audience, he would just be a guy pushing a shopping cart around the park.

    The other questions are:

    1. Who takes him seriously and throws money at him and why?

    2. How long and how crazy can he get before people start tuning him out?

This does happen although it is rare. James Dobson seems to have found the limits of hate and hypocrisy. Michele Bachmann seems to have found the limits to fundie xian induced cognitive impairment. Sarah Palin seems to hve found the limits to intellectual vacuum. Joe McCarthy found the limits to calling important people commies during the Cold War.

Right now, there is zero evidence that he is pushing any limits. His networks are growing quite rapidly.

Wait a minute…I keep seeing speculation that Andy Kaufman didn’t really die. And did you ever hear of “Glen Beck” before Kaufman’s “death”? Obviously, “Glen Beck” really IS Andy Kaufman!

  • jamessweet

He stole this idea from Stephen Colbert!

I am getting quite tired of the wingnuts taking over-the-top satire as a stretch-goal, though…

Ugh that was pathetic. Reminds me of those horribly contrived, lame-ass emails, such as the one in which a strawman liberal, atheist professor gets pwned by a supposed meek and humble Christian student. Just awful.

  • donalbain

What was the mustache guy’s accent supposed to be?

  • Stevarious, Public Health Problem

Why did the first guy confess to a murder he didn’t commit?

The usual: The cops convinced him that guilty or not, they had enough evidence to convict him and send him away forever. Then they convinced him that if he plead guilty, the punishment would be very light.

Either that or they beat him until he ‘confessed’ – the one thing we know for a fact about torture is that it is very good at making people say what you want them to say.

Either of these scenarios are likely in a corrupt police precinct – of which there are a great many in this country.

  • sailor1031

We’ll know for sure when he hires the Nairobi String Quartet to provide music for the show.

  • suttkus

If Beck were conducting some elaborate fraud, surely the moment for the punchline would have been the final episode of his Fox show. I think we can safely conclude that he’s just an idiot.

Slickly-produced? I’m fairly sure I could film & produce a better sketch with a cellphone camera and a 5 year old laptop.

He’s obviously a Foreigner, therefore it’s a Foreign accent. Didn’t you know all white-skinned foreigners sound like that when they talk American? Of course, if he were a brown-skinned foreigner, he’d sound like Apu from the Simpsons.

Really though, what on earth did I just watch? What was that… performance art, supposed to be?

  • DrewN

I fail at block quotes, sorry.

  • DBP

Either of these scenarios are likely in a corrupt police precinct – of which there are a great many in this country.

Well those are possible. It’s entirely possible the person truly believed he committed the murder.

I remember a case where a guy woke up after a weekend of drinking and remembered killing someone. He went to the police. Showed them how he did it and where he buried the body. They let him go because there was no evidence of a murder at all. They dug up an entire field where he said the body was buried, checked for fibers, hairs, blood, etc. Found nothing. No body ever showed up from this supposed murder. They showed that you couldn’t even fit a body in the trunk of the car he said he used for transporting the body. He still struggles (as far as a report on him from the 90s said) with the belief that he killed a guy. He spent many years looking at newspaper archives of missing persons.

Maybe Beck woke up one day after a bender and believed his drunken horseshit was actually brilliant/

Okay, it’s the hair color that’s got all of you fooled.

That pornstache can ONLY belong to Joe Farahsite.

I have to say that if I didn’t have to pay for the privilege I’d probably watch him as performance art. I’ve been saying that for a while now. I realize that there are terrifying people who believe him but if you can watch him like a weird Andy Kaufman-esque performance it’s pretty awesome. I especially like it when he brings out the Blackboard of DOOM.
