House Passes Bill Based on Crazy Conspiracy Theory

The U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment to the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security for next year forbidding DHS from making large ammunition purchases without Congressional approval. The vote was 234-192.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) proposed an amendment to the DHS spending bill for 2014 that would require the report to Congress before it can pursue plans to buy 1.1 billion rounds of ammunition. Meadows said the speed bump is a necessary reaction to news of the huge purchase, which alarmed many Americans and prompted conservative groups to suspect that the government was stocking up on the rounds to fight citizens.

“Given this large purchase, the American people and members of Congress rightfully had concerns and questions,” Meadows said. “This is a responsible amendment which ensures that Congress and the American people are aware of the necessity and the cost of ammunition prior to entering into new contracts for procurement.”

This is another example of just how thoroughly the Republican party has mainstreamed the crazy. This loony conspiracy theory is so far out on the fringe that even the NRA has debunked it, for crying out loud. And yet 216 Republicans in the House voted for it, with only 13 voting against it. This is pandering to the most extreme voices, people who are even to the right of the NRA. This is one of the differences between the two parties. Yeah, liberals have their loons too, but the Democratic party hasn’t mainstreamed them and given them power.

There’s no excuse for a yes vote. If a House Republican is sane and ethical, they could have also just not voted. But given their monolithic position on climate change, we know there are no sane ethical House Republicans, therefore we see more illustrations of how an insane unethical political group behaves.

I’m starting to see local politicians propose or even pass policy based on their fear of Agenda 21, both at the local and state of MI level.

So if the people who control the second largest fucking army in the world* want to attack someone they need to buy the ammo in specially and use airport security guards rather than (did I mention) the second largest fucking army in the world.

*But with a bigger budget than the PLA

and prompted conservative groups to suspect that the government was stocking up on the rounds to fight citizens.

    This is stupid.

If the US government was going to fight the citizens, they have a group already set up for it. The US armed forces who probably aren’t running short of ammuntion. Inasmuch as the US spends 40% of the world military budget.

Besides which, if they have to, what is preventing DHS from just borrowing ammo from…the military?

  • http://thelogicaloutlook.blogspot.com Kathy Orlinsky

I’m surprised the NRA allowed this to pass. Their bosses (the gun and ammunition manufacturers) aren’t going to like it. Is the NRA losing control of congress? That could be a good thing.

  • raven

This is stupid on many levels.

If enough citizens don’t like the government, it just goes away.

And having a DHS or military doesn’t make much difference.

This is partly because the DHS and military are made up of citizens themselves. They aren’t all that fond of shooting their friends, family members, or neighbors.

    Examples.

    1. Look what happened to the commies. The USSR had the second largest military in the world and thousands of nukes. What good did it do them in the end? Or any of the other Eastern Europeans.

    2. Look what happened in Iran or Egypt. Or a lot of other places.

    3. If the government is really bad and unpopular, quite often the security forces are the ones that step in and push them out.

    4. Here in the USA, we can and do regularly just change governments. It’s called democracy and voting.

Cthulhu, this isn’t even ancient history. Some of this happened a few years ago.

I don’t know, but itsn’t Homeland Security one of your shady secretly spying police forces? And 1.1 gigarounds is about 4 bullets per American. I doubt that even Beria’s NKVD had a need for that many bullets.

DHS is an umbrella group for a number of agencies including, for some reason, the US Coast Guard.

The numbers kicking around out there appears to be around 1500 rounds per agent per year, which isn’t all that much if you factor in training, it’s pretty easy to blow through 250 rounds during a range session, even if they only train once every couple months, they’ll go through 1500 rounds in a year easily.

THATS RIGHT! OBAMA DOESNT NEED THE “DEPARTMENT” OF “HOMELAND” “SECURITY” SINCE HES ALREADY GOT HIS MUSLIN ARMY HERE IN AMERICA!

A muslin army wouldn’t be too bad, you could make nice breathable dresses out of them at low cost.

I love how it’s aimed at DHS but puts no restrictions on how much ammo the DOD can buy. If the government were planning on attacking its own citizens, which do you think they’d use: DHS agents armed only with sidearms or US soldiers with fulling automatic weapons, rpgs, Apache helicopters, and ICBMs?

As you can see from that link, the 1.1 billion number is bullshit.

They believe, totally, that the Patriots In Uniform would rise up on the side of True Americans™ against the tyrants on the Potomac. So they’re not afraid of the military — in fact, several that I’ve talked to consider it their job to Keep Freedom Alive until the Army mutinies and Justice Triumphs.

Thus, at least in part, the whole Army of God thing. Make sure that when push comes to shove the troops have their priorities straight and side with Heaven rather than the Constitution.

Best estimate I can find for DHS potentially armed personnel is around 165,000. So the DHS wants around 6700 rounds per person. You’d have to spend a lot of time on the range to use up that much ammo in a year at normal training rates.

The purchase is over a 5 year period, it’s not a single transaction, which reduces it to 1300 rounds a year per agent – 100 rounds a month seems pretty reasonable for training purposes.

It looks like they go through about 100m rounds a year for training plus another 25-30m for operational use, which adds up to about 650m rounds over 5 years (a link I saw earlier said they were looking to purchase around 750m in total instead of the 1.1bn number I saw kicking around).

Honestly, I think the big pressure here was coming from people who think that the government is buying up all the ammo to keep availability low and prices high.

Kyoseki@ 20, there is no 750 million round contract. That is an Internet myth that keeps getting repeated, but is based on BS from someone who failed basic arithmetic.

Well, it’s definitely not a hard number and it’s definitely not a single contract, but the link you posted earlier said that DHS has at two contracts for .40 S&W and .223 Remington totaling over 600 million rounds (over a 5 year period), not counting all the other calibers they use.

I can well believe that they have purchase agreements in place for at least 750 million rounds, I’d be surprised (and honestly a little concerned) if they didn’t – I can tell you that the ammunition market is pretty goddamned fickle, .308 in particular is rarer than rocking horse shit right now.

… but yes, it doesn’t mean they’re actually BUYING that much, although given that they go through 120-130m rounds a year anyway, over 5 years, they’re going to be pretty close to 700m rounds anyway.
