FTBConscience is Coming

As PZ announced this morning, we’re going to put on our own conference the weekend of July 19-21. Many of us regularly speak at conferences and attend them and we know they can be damned expensive and difficult to get to, so FTBConscience will be an free and will take place entirely online. We’re going to use Google On Air Hangouts for panel discussions and you’ll be able to participate in Q&A just like at a real conference.

We’ve got some great panels lined up with lots of brilliant speakers. I’m going to be moderating a panel on critical thinking with my good friend Jeremy Beahan and (hopefully) Julia Galef, if we can work out the timing with her. We’ll be talking about the many ways our brains undermine our rationality and how to avoid taking the kind of cognitive shortcuts that can make us all downright unreasonable at times. More details will be coming in the weeks ahead, but mark your calendars now and join us if you can.

Oh, and you can get in on the act too. If you have an idea for a panel or talk, you can email PZ (this was all his idea and he’s doing the heavy lifting) with a proposal and we’ll see if we can fit it into the schedule. The lineup already includes some of my favorite people, including James Croft, Debbie Goddard, Jamila Bey, JT Eberhard, Bora Zivkovic and many more.

About Ed Brayton

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

I admit that my intial misreading of the title a feared my heart. I look forward to hearing from at least three name on the list (jamila, bora and many) but I’m sure the others will be good too.

Bora Zivkovic, yay! Sorry, other than JT I’m unfamiliar with the other speakers but I’m sure it will be time well-spent.
