Rick Santorum and YMCA Showers

Rick Santorum was recently given the William Wilberforce Award by Students for Life and his acceptance speech was, to put it mildly, a bit strange. Among the more bizarre things it it, he claimed that liberals “make it uncomfortable for students who come to Austin to shower at a YMCA gym.” Um. Okay.

Yet again, the laddie doth protest too much.

I’m always getting those two mixed up. Which one was the abolutionist and which was the legalistic moralist again?

  • ludicrous

Poor man is scared to death of his latent fantasies erupting into consciousness.

  • Chiroptera

Damn. Now I have the Village People stuck in my head.

  • exdrone

They’re willing to do and say uncomfortable things in mixed company

Like talking about showering with young students in YMCA gyms at a press conference.

Apparently, he’s talking about an incident where an anti-abortion youth group visiting Austin (I think) made arrangements to use the showers at a nearby YMCA while they were there. While showering, they commenced to harangue the other users of the Y with anti-abortion rhetoric, violating the YMCA policy that politics are not an appropriate topic of discussion there, and got kicked out.

Ya know what creeps me out in YMCA showers? Creepy old leering men who I bet vote republican.

  • raven

Satanorum does have one redeeming quality, hard as that is to imagine.

He can’t stop the weird thoughts echoing through his dark and empty mind from getting out.

He has left a huge paper trail behind him and it makes him look well, about as warped as it gets.

    regexp,

You gotta problem with “old”? Get over it. All age’s own creep. Fear of the “old” will limit you in ways you are not even aware of.

Young man: there’s no need to feel down…

“You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal. You can do whatever you feel.

Excuse me a moment, I think I need a shower.

  • matty1

    OK I think he’s arguing.

    1. Gays hang out at the YMCA (see the song)

    2. Christian students want to go the YMCA, which does have their name, to convert the gays

    3. The gays make them uncomfortable by not converting to self hating Christianity on the spot

He also said America won independence because they ‘wanted it more’, nothing to do with the French arms and troops then?

  • Ellie

They allow mixed company showering at the Austin YMCA? Very interesting…..

Apparently something about abortion dials up his locker-room modesty.

  • tubi

Here in Minnesota we had a case of a man in his 50s taking pictures of boys in the locker room at the Y using a camera setting on his watch. It hit the news the day before I was supposed to take my 8 year old son and two of his friends to spend the day swimming at the Y. The same one the guy was caught at.

Needless to say we had a conversation with the boys about staying vigilant and letting me know if they were uncomfortable. But I don’t think that’s what Ol’ Frothy is talking about.

We can avoid the locker room, but how can we stop Santorum from undressing us in his mind?

The thing is, anyone who has been in PE class, been on a sports team, worked out or played tennis or golf or whatever at a gym or country club, been in the military, or gone to summer camp, which is to say almost everyone, has showered with gay people, and may well have slept in a cabin or tent with someone gay. They just didn’t know—at least not usually, not for sure—which ones were gay. Somehow Western Civilization survived that. The idea that everything has changed just because in some cases—still not all—we might know which ones are gay is just ludicrous.

It’s not ludicrous, precisely because gays are coming out of the closet. So when we shower with others of the same sex that we know, we are going to increasingly be exposed to showering with people attracted to our sex. That is a new dynamic and an awesome hurdle for heteros to overcome. ‘Awesome’ because it’s one step in the normalization process for full acceptance of gay people, beyond their merely securing equal legal protections but also achieving social acceptance as well.

    matty1:

The Christian group actually wasn’t harassing gays at the Y. Apparently, they were trying to debate abortion with other people using the showers (they were in Austin because of the Texas special session). That s what got them kicked out. Somehow, Santorum turned that around and tried to claim it was the liberals who were bothering the Christians.

  • Nemo

Well, thanks for the compliments, Rick.

  • lofgren

C’mon guys. Santorum is just concerned that liberals’ shower shenanigans might accidentally trigger Bruce Banner’s transformation into the Incredible Hulk, which puts us all at risk

  • matty1

    liberals’ shower shenanigans

That’s still one of my favourite ‘adult’ films.
