Klingenschmitt: American Law Should Follow God’s Law

Here’s an amusing video of Gordon Klingenschmitt quoting the Bible to support the claim that American law should be based on “God’s law.” Which is, of course, found in the Bible. Gee, the Bible says we should follow the Bible? How shocking. And how utterly irrelevant to what the law should actually say in this country. We are not a theocracy, despite your best effort to make us one.

About Ed Brayton

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

Of course we should follow Loki’s law.

I like the idea of fighting the Ice Giants without being subjected to a lawsuit.

What about the competing claims of the laws of Narnia, Middle Earth, and the Ministry of Magic?

  • matty1

@2 Random fact all three authors were Christians, albeit in Rowlings case I think all we have is a throwaway comment that “I go to church” while Lewis was a full on evangelist. Anyway I suspect they would say their fictional laws are compatible with the Bible as they understand it.

Yes indeed, Constitutional democracy comes right from God and the Bible. They’re all connected through their basic ideals.

Which is why God and Jesus are going to lose the next heavenly elections. Authority can only be derived from consent of the governed. Look at all this “judgment” crap based on arbitrary criteria. Who does Christ think he is — king? Well, I didn’t vote for him!

I mean, if I went around tellin’ everyone I was Emperor because a bunch of ornery guys nailed me to a wooden board, they’d put me away!

So he wants to destroy the pork industry as well as the shrimp, lobster and oyster fishing industries by reverting to biblical law and promote the mining of fist size rocks for the virtuous to enforce the many transgressions for which stoning is prescribed?

  • exdrone

Does that mean that the Supreme Court would become The Great Sanhedrin?

Hmmm. At least that would be a green industry. After a certain amount of the product were produced, we could begin recycling. There would be a small amount of loss, sure – people are careless. But the population would also be dropping, and after a while there wouldn’t be enough stonings to maintain a growing loss. A good thing, too, for we would eventually have to righteously terminate the stone production crew.

@6 Joel Anderson: I thought it was spelled with a “p” and not a “t”

No, he meant to use the “t’ but a typo had caused him to use an “r” when he meant to use an “h”.

Yeah Klingenschmitt, lets abandon the US constitution for what you think the almighty wants us to do without any real evidence other than what’s in a book that was written by mere mortals like ourselves, in a time much more ignorant and unscientific, not to mention bigoted, than today. Oh and while you’re at it, you wouldn’t mind if people following any other faith besides yours got us to change our laws to more closely reflect their religious views? Yeah I thought so, you authoritarian hypocrite.
