Fischer: Putin a ‘Lion of Christianity’

The Christian right’s sudden love of Vladimir Putin is so revealing, I think. They scream and holler about Obama being a tyrannical dictator and now they’re fawning all over a man who actually is an autocratic thug. Bryan Fischer publicly fellated Putin on his radio show a few days ago, calling him a “lion of Christianity.” I bet he just thinks Putin looks hot with his shirt off.

I wonder what Fischer thinks about Putin getting a divorce from his wife?

  • Subtract Hominem, a product of Nauseam

    Hmmmm…. Cristianity… Lions….

So, he uses state power to round up members of an obscure and powerless minority, publicly harm or execute them, and create martyrs which garner sympathy for their cause? Yeah, that sounds about right.

Now, look, Obama’s a bad tyrant for oppressing Christians’ right to treat Unpopular Minorities like shit. Putin is a good tyrant for aiding Christians’ right to treat Unpopular Minorities like shit.

“He might be a sonofabitch but he’s our sonofabitch.”

Fischer is rather clueless about everything.

Putin has been playing the nationalist and ethnic card.

One of his policies is to be anti-western and anti-USA. That isn’t a problem for Fischer. He doesn’t like the USA either.

  • John Pieret

Modus is right. The wingnuts are not afraid of a tyrannical dictator as long as he (she wouldn’t do at all!) dictates stuff they like. In fact, they would prefer it to democracy where (for heaven’s sake!) people might actually decide that gay marrige is ok.

I doubt that Fischer knows that a male lion, if he takes over a pride, will kill the cubs that he did not sire. Fischer and his ilk shouldn’t act on their fantasy of living under Putin unless they are willinf to convert to Russian Othodox Church.

Is Putin a Christian? If he is, that would have been kind of recent: he was a high ranking KGB officer in the former USSR when atheism was pretty much a prerequisite for advancement.

I suppose he could have been hiding his religious beliefs. On the other hand, he may now be hiding his religious non-beliefs. I dunno.

now they’re fawning all over a man who actually is an autocratic thug

And also a former KGB agent. Sam Fisher has way more sympathy for an authentic enforcer of communism than for a man suspected of secretly arboring social-democrats’ opinions, which is unsurprising given that Fisher has always been a little stalinist at heart. Somewhere, Orwell is saying “I fucking told you so

I don’t think that, when Fischer fixates on Putin’s bare-chested macho posing, it’s a lion that he is seeing, as much as a Russian bear.

  • tubi

I wonder if Fischer sees shining stars of light meant just for him shooting from Putin’s eyes whenever he sees him on TV.

Since we are looking at videos:

I know, I know…I have a terribly juvenile sense of humor!

But I love Epic Rap Battles of History!

Tubi: I wonder if Fischer sees shining stars of light meant just for him shooting from Putin’s eyes whenever he sees him on TV.

You mean the way GW Bush reportedly looked into Putin’s eyes and touched his soul?

  • caseloweraz

Fischer quoting Putin: “Policies are pursued that put large families and same-sex partnerships in the same category.”

You mean, the category of things which are legally permissible?

“Belief in God and belief in Satan.”

Is this supposed to be a sentence?

“What can be a better indication of a moral crisis in human society than its loss of the ability for self-reproduction?”

Here’s one: A political party hides its anti-constitutional campaign for social dominance behind the cloak of Christianity. Loss of the ability to reproduce would be an existential crisis but not necessarily a moral one. Anyway, it’s absurd to claim that the USA has lost the ability to reproduce.

That Vladimir Putin, he be a-lyin’ for Christianity.

Sam Fisher? The Splinter Cell guy?

  • jasonfailes

It’s going to be hilarious to watch fudamentalists drop the non-argument that equal rights for homosexuals somehow causes a “loss of the ability for self-reproduction”, about ten seconds after two lesbians give birth to a child that they are both the biological parents of.

  • dingojack

So Fischer’s gonna start feeding christians to Putin the White Lion?!?

    Dingo

  • Ichthyic

Don’t knock this trend, I say. maybe all these loons will decide they’d be better off living in Russia.

I would enjoy both their absence and the look on their faces when they are smacked with reality over there.

I suspect he doesn’t care much and just plays whatever gets him (closer to) what he needs / wants.

  • The Beautiful Void

    @18 Macallan:

Yep. That Putin, he be a lyin’ of Christianity.

    (Couldn’t resist.)

This is Wikepedia’s Religion section on Vladimir Putin:

Putin’s father was “a model communist, genuinely believing in its ideals while trying to put them into practice in his own life”. With this dedication he became secretary of the Party cell in his workshop and then after taking night classes joined the factory’s Party bureau.[368] Though his father was a “militant atheist”,[369] Putin’s mother “was a devoted Orthodox believer”. Though she kept no icons at home, she attended church regularly, despite the government’s persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church at that time. She ensured that Putin was secretly christened as a baby and she regularly took him to services. His father knew of this but turned a blind eye.[368]

According to Putin’s own statements, his religious awakening followed the serious car crash of his wife in 1993, and was deepened by a life-threatening fire that burned down their dacha in August 1996.[369] Right before an official visit to Israel his mother gave him his baptismal cross telling him to get it blessed “I did as she said and then put the cross around my neck. I have never taken it off since.”[368] When asked whether he believes in God during his interview with Time, he responded saying: “…There are things I believe, which should not in my position, at least, be shared with the public at large for everybody’s consumption because that would look like self-advertising or a political striptease.”[370]

  • macallan

because that would look like self-advertising or a political striptease

    Unlike actual self-advertising.

    Damn you, pseudo-html.
