Beck: Catholics Brainwashed My Daughter!

Poor Glenn Beck. He’s just so persecuted. Why, a Catholic university even turned his daughter against him and convinced her that he was anti-gay just because he wants to deny them equal rights. Naturally, this is the most horrible oppression imaginable.

“There’s no tolerance of my opinion,” Beck agreed. “This is the thing, my daughter went to Fordham University, which I’m glad I didn’t spend a dime on, she did it all through scholarship and I would not have paid for that education because here’s this Catholic university that taught my daughter that the Bible was nonsense and it was just a bad experience.”

“But she thought for a while that I was intolerant,” he added. “And I kept saying to her, ‘Honey, you don’t understand. When it comes to gay marriage, for example, I have gay friends, I have gay employees, I don’t really care. What you do is what you do. You work that out. That’s your life.’ But I tried to explain to her, what this really is about is telling my church what I have to believe.”

“You can’t force me to say that my God says you can be married or not married. You can’t force me to do that. She didn’t believe me until everything started going through, and then she started seeing the intolerance on the other side.”

Uh, Glenn…no one is trying to force you to say or think anything. They’re criticizing you. Get. The. Fuck. Over. It.

Unexpectedly, I was able to confirm that Glenn Beck does in fact have a daughter.

So already his story is on a much stronger foundation than pretty much anything else he was ever ‘reported’.

“this Catholic university that taught my daughter that the Bible was nonsense…”

Uh, Glenn?? Aren’t you a follower of the Book of Mormon?

  • http://zenoferox.blogspot.com/ Zeno

No doubt Fordham taught Beck’s daughter that the Bible is not to be taken literally. That was surely enough to make Beck pop his top.

  • http://nwrickert.wordpress.com/ Neil Rickert

… because here’s this Catholic university that taught my daughter that the Bible was nonsense and it was just a bad experience.

I’ll take that as a strong endorsement of Fordham.

“There’s no tolerance of my opinion.”

And it never would occur to him that his opinions are intolerable.

  • tsig

Tolerance means you have to be tolerant of my intolerance. :(

    Wonderful.

But he has gay friends! Even gay employees! And I bet he’d allow them to use his bathroom. Why, he just doesn’t care.

If that doesn’t show just how not intolerant he is, I don’t know what would.

  • jnorris

Translation: daughter grew up some while at a university. Note to Mr Beck: children do that at university. You should be proud your daughter is doing some critical thinking and is on her way to being an adult. But just to be careful, kick her out of the house and disinherit her like the other fundies do.

  • gshelley

When it comes to gay marriage, for example, I have gay friends, I have gay employees, I don’t really care. What you do is what you do. You work that out. That’s your life.

I’m confused. Does he care or not? Is he actually not against SSM, or does his not caring taking some other form in which he is actually against it?

I’m also a little surprised that a Catholic university takes a position against the Catholic church

  • http://www.pixelated-reality.com Alareth

    Am I missing something here?

The Catholics brainwashed her into being PRO gay marriage?

  • http://tonythompsonjr%40facebook.com Tony! The Queer Shoop!

It probably wasn’t “The Catholics” that brainwashed her, so much as it was her exposure to other cultural values while at Fordham.

    Typical Beck.

You can’t force me to say that my God says you can be married or not married. You can’t force me to do that.

Not the point, Glenn. The point is that your can’t force the rest of us to accept your god’s opinion about what’s a marriage and what’s not.

I sincerely hope his daughter takes after her mother, and I say that without knowing anything about her.

Here I thought he gave the commencement speech at Liberty University when his daughter graduated a year or two ago, and I wondered how that sat with his being a Mormon. How many daughters does he have, or am I thinking of somebody else entirely?

  • busterggi

Why would Beck care about the bible? He belongs to the Church of Latter-Day Fan fiction.

“I’m also a little surprised that a Catholic university takes a position against the Catholic church”

The Catholic Church does not teach the Bible is literal truth, and relies a lot on philosophy (since until the past couple hundred years most philosophers were Catholic or mainline Protestant just because there was nothing else to be)

If you check out Dan Fincke’s blog (now on Patheos) you’ll learn more, he went to Fordham.

Yes, indeed. One of the reasons to go away to school is to experience those new ideas, meet different people, and enlarge one’s horizons. Our daughter is in her third year at a very progressive liberal arts college… very different from our mostly-white suburban town. While Mr Q and I are liberal progressives, nonetheless we have benefitted from all the new ideas and experiences she has shared with us. Through her, we’ve been exposed to new ideas, met people we otherwise might not have even noticed, and, through some VERY lively dinnertime conversations, been forced (in a nice way!) to examine our assumptions about all kinds of things.

We would have been very disappointed if she had NOT undergone this kind of transformative thinking. As you say, it’s part of growing up.

Not only is Glenn Beck a bad thinker, he is a bad father.

The guy is estimated to be worth $100 million.

Not surprised. Just call him a bad human and that covers everything.

  • http://saltycurrent.blogspot.com SC (Salty Current), OM

He has four children – three daughters and a son.

  • alanb

He has 2 daughters from his first marriage and the other 2 kids are from his 2nd marriage. The middle daughter graduated in 2013 but The Google has yet to tell me where she graduated.

  • TxSkeptic

This is the thing, my daughter went to Fordham University, which I’m glad I didn’t spend a dime on, …

One might suspect the reason he didn’t spend a dime on her education was not because she went to Fordham, but because, as a female, she dared to desire higher education at all. Kudos to his daughter and I hope the other two spread their wings as well.

  • John Pieret

I’m also a little surprised that a Catholic university takes a position against the Catholic church

Fordham is run by the Jesuits who, in my experience at a Jesuit college [mumble] years ago, fiercely believe in intellectual integrity and debate. While they probably wouldn’t endorse SSM outright, neither would they get the vapors if students advocated for LGBT rights, including for SSM.

Indeed, the university has a student PRIDE Alliance that:

… stands for People Recognizing Identities & Differences for Equality. It is a club that is devoted to supporting students as they integrate their sexual orientation into their personhood. PRIDE Alliance promotes and advocates for an open, accepting environment at Fordham University for all people. PRIDE Alliance is comprised of LGBT members as well as straight allies and sponsors many campus programs for all students.

The “brain washing” the Jebbies generally do is opening student minds and letting some fresh air in.

  • chuckster

It is funny how anti-gay bigots are offended when you compare then to racial bigpts but then start their defense with the classic “Some of my beat firends are . . . but” defense

  • grumpyoldfart

    Beck says:

But she thought for a while that I was intolerant.

    She didn’t believe me until…

I don’t think he’s complaining about her Catholic education. I think he’s boasting that he got her to reject all the Catholic nonsense and no she is back on his side and believing everything HE says.

  • John Hinkle

You can’t force me to say that my God says you can be married or not married.

Did God even have an opinion on it? I thought he was just against men reclining with each other.

  • steve84

“We just have a difference of opinion” is a new meme the religious right uses all over. They pretend that it’s just something you can “agree to disagree over”.

In reality, that would mean just refusing to get gay married and let out people do what they want.

    From Wikipedia:

In 1996, while working for a New Haven area radio station, Beck took a theology class at Yale University, with a written recommendation from Senator Joe Lieberman, a Yale alumnus who was a fan of Beck’s show at the time.[38] Beck enrolled in an “Early Christology” course, but soon withdrew, marking the extent of his post-secondary education.[36][39]

Beck then began a “spiritual quest” in which he “sought out answers in churches and bookstores”.[36] As he later recounted in his books and stage performances, Beck’s first attempt at self-education involved six wide-ranging authors, comprising what Beck jokingly calls “the library of a serial killer”: Alan Dershowitz, Pope John Paul II, Adolf Hitler, Billy Graham, Carl Sagan, and Friedrich Nietzsche.

    Carl Sagan?

Much like John Pieret, My hubby and I were educated at a Jesuit university many, many years ago.

The Jesuits taught us to question everything (including authority) and to answer a question with a question. Those Jesuits were quite progressive, and we have a lot of respect for them.

I’m glad to know that Jesuit universities are still teaching critical thinking.

I hope that Beck’s daughter was only smiling and nodding and pretending to agree with him.

  • Crip Dyke, Right Reverend Feminist FuckToy of Death & Her Handmaiden

Okay, I’ve done some thinking about this example. I think I now understand quite a number of right wing figures much better than I have in the past.

    Start with Beck’s premise:

One’s child’s refusal to agree with one, despite one’s threats and bluster, is horrific oppression (of the one, not the child).

    then add a few more:

an oppressor is one who oppresses

3-year olds readily, willfully, and even gleefully refuse to agree with their parents quite often.

It is better not to be oppressed.

Where oppression exists, the only way to avoid being oppressed is to be the oppressor.

    It then follows:

3-year olds are the most successful and unrepentant oppressors in history

That success must have roots in what 3-year olds are actually doing.

So oppression exists in any society that has 3-year olds

Therefore, if I wish to avoid being oppressed, I must act like a 3-year old, as much as possible, as often as possible.

I think this has a ton of explanatory potential.

A friend who went to the only Catholic university here in Oz tells the story of her 3rd day there. She had a first year, first semester subject ‘The Old Testament’. The Josephite nun running the course (Josephites are an Aussie order known for valuing education, and generally women you do not want to get in the way of) told the lecture hall that anyone taking the Genesis literally may as well leave, as Jews and Muslims have been laughing at Christians for taking it so. Furthermore, the subject was not to be old ‘Old Testament’ but ‘Hebrew Scripture’ as ‘old’ was an insult to the Jews, and she’d done a lot of her work with Jewish scholars.

  • Ichthyic

Uh, Glenn?? Aren’t you a follower of the Book of Mormon?

only on Tuesday and Thursday. Sunday and Friday is Catholic, and the rest are days for various flavors of fictional protestantism.

Glen has never been anything other than a mouth to stuff money into. No, wait, i think maybe in his very first month as a radio broadcaster, before he hit rock bottom, became an alcoholic, and went insane, he had some integrity. He sold that very early on though, merely for the chance to be a lapdog at Clear Channel.

    and he’s still doing it.

I really can’t think of a public persona with less integrity. Not even David Barton, and that’s saying something.

  • Ichthyic

I think this has a ton of explanatory potential.

    i cannot but agree.

exactly why I was surprised, and laughing, when it turned out a Jesuit got chosen to be Pope.

and he certainly has not disappointed on that front, at least.
